Does anyone keep a hair journal?

I've tried SO many different products and so many different ways to style that I confuse myself.

I thought maybe I'd journal so I could look back and see what works and what doesn't. (does this mean I am totally anal or what?)
Any of you do this? How do you record? On a PC?
Does it work for you? Any tips?

TIA

I don't really keep a journal, but I keep track of what products I use and the results I got from them by taking pictures and labelling the date and products used in my yahoo hair album.

Okay, I'm about to show my geekiness.

I have a database with fields for brand, product name, type (shampoo, conditioner, cream, gel, clarifier, DT, leave-in, pomade, spray, other), rating (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent, not tried-ingreds, not tried-for volume, discontinued), ingredients, and comments. That way I can keep track of what I've liked, disliked, what the formulation was at the time, etc.

Anyway, it really helps me keep track of what I've tried and brand good/bad luck.
I keep all that info on a spreadsheet- what products I've used and what I thought of them, as well as different combos I've used and how they worked out...

I do! Its a little spiral notebook labeled "Curly Hair Journal" and I record produts in three categories: Ones I love, ok stuff, and stuff I do not like. I record directions on how to do certain styles, like two strand twists and what I did on specific days to give great results. My hair is so tempermental and wacky, that this journal helps keep me straight. I also list good places to get products I like, possible salons to try in future, and anything and everything to help me w/ my hair! Dorky, no. Happily informed, yes!
Super Thick corkscrews and waves. LOVE Elucence MBC, Giovanni 50/50 condish, Qhemet Products, V05 Calming Chamomile Tea Therapy condish, Jessicurl WDT. These are my official HG's that I love oh so much

I write my good combos and "want to try" combos just in a Notepad text file on my puter. Plus I'll cut and paste combos that I find here and how to use it in that file, too.

With all the products and combos, we've got to have some way to keep them straight (no pun intended )!

if I see a good idea on this site, I'll copy and paste into a word document. That's all the effort I'm willing to expend.

I do. I have a fotki. My www button links to my journal. My journal entries are not really that detailed so they probably won't be much help. Plus I am non CG and use sulfates and cones. And my journal isn't updated that often. I will update it tonight though. I basically just record whether I am having a good day or not.

I always forget to write in my journal but I do take pics like crazy. I put what products I used, if I tried plopping or not etc so I can look back at what works or doesn't for me.

If it smells good put it in your hair, if it tastes good spit it out!

Another perfectionist here...

After I decided to lighten my hair in '03 I ended up becoming a PJ and precisely so I could keep track of the different combos I tried I started a journal in my PC (using Word) in '04. At the top I listed all my COs divided in categories of rinse-out, leave-in and DTs, moisturizers and oils and, finally, stylers and I followed each with a brief comment. In doing this I was shocked to see how much stuff I had accumulated at the time so I began giving away products from my graveyard soon after that! I followed the date/weekday heading of each entry with a key word such as (Washed) (Clarified) (Color Retouch) (DTd), etc. and gave a rating to the results of that day with asterisks: 1=barely fair, 2=good 3=really good so it would be easier for me to find the best hair days. I always put in bold letters the (usually abreviated) names of the products I used.

That first year I also copied the LOI (list of ingredients) of several popular CG-friendly products which I still consult whenever I give my opinion or advice to anyone who uses them. I have continued to journal since then and find it helpful and entertaining (go figure ). This year, to make identifying the combos even easier, at the beginning of each entry I write CO: Styler: and fill in with whatever I used that day so when I look at the asterisks I know immediately which combos gave me the best hair most consistently.

Oh LOL - hairdiaries - is that where you got your name?

Thanks everyone for your input. Being an accountant, I think I'll try the spreadsheet method. I need to remember the combos that absolutely don't work as well as those that do.

And having the weather as a category makes sense - I have fine 2b/3a hair so my hair definately changes with the weather.

Thanks again!
