why does almost every styling product dry out my hair?

i am not CG, ive tried it and it did nothing for me. my hair is fine without it
so years ago before i straightened my hair id just use garnier fructis leave in conditioner everyday and my hair was always soft.
now my hair is much shorter and poofier so i cant get away with just a leave in. but if i just use that same leave in, it dries soft.
no matter what gel i use, all the ones ive trried do not have alcohol or anything drying in them, my hair feels dry once i scrunch out the crunch. it feels dry nasty and knotty, and gets frizzy even if i use a lot of a hard hold gel.
ive tried a cream type thing too and that worked okay, it did not make my hair dry but it worked ok.
i really like suave captivating curls whipped cream mousse, it seems like it is so moisturizing in my wet hair, it doesnt have any alcohol. but when my hair dries, the ends feel all dry and stuff!
this annoys me bc my hair is not dry at all, only w/ these styling products in it.

the other day i wore my hair with nothing in it whatsoever it wasnt frizzy at all, just very volumized. and undefined. i find that the more i mess with my hair and the more product in it, the wore it feels and frizzier it looks. its just poofier.
ALSO whenever ido my hair on the weekends i shower at like 8 or later and it comes out much better. not frizzy or poofy. during the week i shower at 5 am and it gets frizzy and poofy a little. is this because its most humid at 5 in the morning?
so does anyone have any suggestions of something i can put in my hair to help poof that wont dry it out?? maybe creams work best for me or conditioner styling. please help!
thanks!
Hmm.. well, you might experiment to see if it's a protein thing. Too much protein can make some people's hair feel dry.

As far as moisture goes - I have had a lot of luck lately with using Shea Moisture conditioner. I wash or co-wash, use a rinse out, and then I put a small amount of SM condish mixed with some AVG. It makes my hair really soft and moistured, and using a tiny bit (dime sized at most mixed with the AVG, and my hair is long and thick), it keeps my hair from getting weighed down, but also keeps it very soft and moistured. I use that combo before I put on gel, btw.

I'm sure you'll get a lot more suggestions, but I hth!
2c/3a/3b, Fine/med, Dense, high porous, & normal elas.

Lo-poo - Renpure Keratin, SMR, Giovanni SaS
clarifying - mix Johnson's H2T with low poo
Co-wash - Suave Nats. clar. or coco.
RO - GVPCB, Ion Eff. Care, TN.
LI - SMR, Cure Care, or RO
Seal - MO or Jojoba
DT - + honey, ACV, & EVOO to SM masque & GVPCB
PT - Gelatin!, CNPF
Styling - FSG, AIF, BRHG, LALS/PS, GF curl spray gel, SM Souffle/Smoothie, LOOB
Oils - MO!, EVOO, jojoba, GSO, SM Elixer, EVCO, VO5 Hairdressing
it could be the alcohol in the products, my hair is ok with it, i dont like it though and try to get stuff with not to omuch in, i dont mind a little bit, but if its too high on the list then i dont bother with it. cause alcohol does dry your hair so try to cut it out nd see what ahppeneds.

my hair: 3c, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

I no longer bother with most gels or setting products because of what you described. How long did you attempt the CG routine? I believe you when you say it didn't work, but it POSSIBLY could be that you didn't give it long enough. My hair was very fussy about all sorts of "finishing" products while I was still using sulfate shampoos.

Something you might try - even if you've had it w/CG - is 'Kinky Curly Curling Custard'. I just tried it for the first time and it is hands down like no other styling treatment I've ever used in my decades-long life (it's the HG for many people here). It's all-natural, has no cones, sulfate, alcohol, etc, and helps set your curls but also encourages retention of the hair's moisture. It's expensive but goes a LOOONG way. It's important that if you buy it, you carefully heed the directions for optimal results (can see YT vids on how to correctly apply it).

Another thing to apply coconut or olive oil after washing it (coconut is my hands down fav). Can lead to supple curls with hold, shine and far less frizz. Some use other oils too - like argan oil - which I have yet to try. ... Yet other use homemade hair gels, like those with a flaxseed base.
