FSG and Magnesium Oil - my HG?

Hi all,

I've been doing CG for about a month and it's been an education and I know I still have lots to learn. I have done A LOT of experimenting, and I just wanted to share that I put Magnesium Oil into my FSG (advice from Kathymac -- thanks!!!) and it made my hair MUCH curlier. I had very little to no frizz and that was after going outside with wet hair in cold wind (usually the kiss of death for my curls). I was really happy about how it turned out! I added the Mag Oil to a recipe with FSG, Honey, Citric Acid and Lavender EO. It made such a difference and I had to share! I'll try to post pics

I hope you like the FSG as much as I do! You have to get past the sliminess of it, which is a tad gross. I never did try Mag Sulfate because I was advised it can be drying, and the Mag Oil is not. Let me know how it goes and the biggest thing I learned is you need to use WAY MORE than you think you should. It needs to be saturated (in my experience anyway) to work well. Also resist the urge to sotc until it's dry. Good luck.

Two questions:

1) Where did you get the magnesium oil? I see it on Amazon, but I'm wondering if it's available at Sally or WF or anything (I'm all about the instant gratification).

2) How much mag oil did you put in your FSG recipe? (First, how much FSG did you make, and how much mag oil did you put in?)
Hair: 3b-3c, fine texture, normal porosity, normal elasticity.

If I'd known curly hair could be this beautiful 20 years ago, I would have ruled the world.
I'm still getting used to this message board! Okay, here is what I did the first time:

4 oz FSG (meaning the finished gel)
1/4 tsp Magnesium Oil
3 drops Lavender essential oil

Then the next time I tried MORE Magnesium Oil:

4 oz FSG
1/2 tsp Magnesium Oil
3 drops Lavender essential oil

To get the FSG, I used a ratio of 1/4 cup Golden Flaxseeds to 1 cup of distilled water.

I have also played with varying amounts of FOTE Aloe Vera Gel and Honey in the FSG, but am still experimenting.

I think I like the first batch, with less Mag Oil in it, as with the second batch, my hair has been too soft to curl nicely. Though I do not know if THAT is the reason, or if it might be over conditioned? I don't know.

Have you made any yet? If so, how did you like it? You have to use a LOT and it will be crunchy, but you can SOTC easily (at least in my case). Good luck! Stephanie

Oh, I forgot -- you asked where I got the Mag oil. I bought a small sample from KathyMac. She is one of the ladies here on NC.com and she was great to order from!

I never did try the epsom salts -- mag sulfate, only the Magnesium Oil! I heard that the mag sulfate can be very drying and at the time, I was already fighting dryness. Now that my hair seems in better condition, I might try it.

Let us know how it compares - both in drying effects and in curl enhancement!!
