Greetings fellow curlytops! I'm new here. Have a quick question for you about tipping your salon owners. Up until recently, my regular hair stylist was also the salon owner. I always tipped him -- and he always accepted the tips. But I've often wondered, is it customary to tip the salon owner?

I'm getting ready to try a new stylist that is closer to home and it just so happens that she too, is the owner of the salon. So... the question still applies. Would love to hear your opinions. Sorry it's not curl-related!

Great, thanks! It's as I thought. I should going forward. However I did not on my last visit. Coincidentally my ex-boss and I shared the same hair stylist. I found out my stylist had been gossiping about me to my ex-boss! Talk about unprofessional, not to mention hurtful. In fact, had he not been half-way through my hair cut when he accidently let it slip, I would have stood up and left. I sucked it up, remained pleasant, paid for my services, tipped the gal who washed and dried my hair and then quietly cancelled my next 2 appointments that I had booked in advance -- and left!

That is highly unprofessional. A client should be a valued thing. I'm sure he wouldn't have appreciated it if you gossiped about him. The word "respect" sure doesn't mean much to some people. Neither does the word "discretion," apparently. A hairdresser is kind of like a bartender. You expect to share your woes with her or him, minus the judgement. You just expect an ear.

agreed. It was pretty icky. Not to mention I've been his client for over 5 years! I figure what goes around comes around.
