Grain alcohol or vodka in FSG?

I came across yet another recipe for homemade FSG. Holding Firm with Flaxseed Just curious if anyone out there uses grain alcohol or vodka in their homemade FSG as called for in this recipe, and if so, what they think of the results they get from it.

I'm actually curious enough to try just one batch of this recipe to see what the deal is. Firmer holding FSG would be cool; hair feeling dried out or something would of course be a deal breaker.

I've never tried this, but I love making my FSG with cornstarch to give it more hold, if that's what you're looking for! Gives it lots more crunch and hold. It is awesome stuff. I made a thread about it recently if you'd like the "recipe".

Hope you get an answer to your real question! I totally sidetracked, lol!!

I have seen a FSG recipe with vodka elsewhere, but I assumed it was for faster drying time. You need something like >50% alcohol for preserving, so that's not the purpose... I think.
The recipe posted had one measly teaspoon flax to 3/4 cup water and 1/4 cup alcohol. That's not enough flax for my tastes. I like it good and goopy.

If I want hold from FSG I use xanthan gum or hydroxyethylcellulose (or pectin) or the combination of epsom salts and honey or agave nectar. Alcohol doesn't have any film-forming capacities, so if it improved hold it must be through faster drying???

I didn't read the whole link, so I may have missed something. But I wonder if the alcohol isn't supposed to be some kind of preservative, and not to give the FSG a harder hold.
Alcohol will be drying, if this would be an issue for your hair. My hair would hate it.
I soak the seeds overnight for more hold. I've also been experimenting with adding xanthum gum.

How odd that someone would go to what seems like such a homemade hair product extreme as adding grain alcohol to their FSG recipe for the purpose of reducing the drying time! I was so hoping there was some ultimate holy grail feature in grain alcohol or vodka that would send us all running to the nearest liquor store to achieve soft, well-defined, frizz-free curls.

Those types of alcohols are too drying for hair. If you're looking for firm hold try agave nectar
Hair Type: 3b/3c (I think! lol)

Interesting. Turns out that grain alcohol is used in some haircare products (usually listed as "alcohol denat" because by law it has to be made un-consumable. Nevertheless, it truly is ethanol)
Heck, Aubrey Organics and other companies have a few products in which it even appears as the first or second ingredient. And there are consumers out there that give the products good reviews.

Given that, I'm guessing that these companies include other ingredients in the products in order to do something to negate the drying effect of the alcohol (after all, people said they liked the product and that it worked for them). But that's a *long* way from just mixing it in with your homemade FSG.
