Sigh, it's winter again. Knit hats mash my curls. Scarves look dopey. I resorted to under the hair earmuffs and a fedora, but STILL...does any one have any great advice for keeping curls curly in the freezing weather?
Hmmm. My hair is straight on top so I have an easy time wearing slouchy-ish knit beanies, the kind that rest more on the back of your head. Is that what you mean by knit hats?

I remember seeing on this site that wool hats are kind of bad for the hair, and hats that are lined with... silk maybe? Or satin? Are good. Hopefully someone comes in and confirms this!

I usually go for either earmuffs or a slouchy knit hat as well. I've heard that switching your part to the far left or right before you put on a hat works, but I looked like a fool with massive curls on just one side of my head, I mean I basically had a right angle, lol. And it didn't help that it got frizzy anyways. My grandmother sewed a satin scarf into the lining of a ski hat, and it's pretty awesome! I wouldn't know how to do this myself though. I find that the slouchy hat is not a bad look at all though! It's a lot better than tight hat+big curly hair.

Satin! I never thought of that! Thank you so much for the tips!
A slouchy beret knit with wool is ideal. Plop your hair into the beret, and it shouldn't smash or stretch out your curls.

I finally remembered the name of the website where I bought my satin-lined hat. It is Curly Zebra - Satin Lined Hats for Curly Hair. They run big, so check with the owner if you're not sure. I think I ordered a medium, but should have gotten a small.

Do you guys all mean those "baggy beanies" that hang behind your head like so?

I pull mine on, then I tuck in my hair, then I hold the band on, lean forward and shake my head to settle my hair in the hat. When I take it off, I usually just give my hair a root-shake, sometimes I mist on a little water and scrunch. It's not perfect, but better than catching a chill. It's winter, gotta make some compromises.
