Residue + Curls in a Bottle (CJ)

I am currently experimenting with some new gels. I got a sample of Curl Junkie's curls in a bottle and decided to play around with it. I wanted to see if it would provide a bit more hold in my hair compared to my trusty Curl Keeper. What I noticed is that it left a weird kind of residue on my hair. Kind of like a clear stretchy glue that had broken into pieces and coated bits of my hair. Is this normal? I haven't heard ANYONE say this about this gel so I'm wondering what happened? I shampooed with Curly Haired Solutions Treatment Shampoo and then used their silk shampoo. I used the Curl Junkie gel on my hair afterwards. What went wrong?

Which CJ Gel did you use? It sounds like a product reaction. It could also be your leave-in.

I wasn't using any leave in conditioner or detangler. The Gel was by Curl Junkie and it's called "Curls in a bottle".

Update. I tried experimenting with "Curls in a Bottle" again. This time I rinsed off a clumb of hair, applied the gel, scrunched the curl and let it dry. Sure enough, once the curl had tried there was weird looking residue all over that section of hair. The hold was awesome and my curl was nice and frizz free...but I can't bear the look of it up close.

I don't know what's happening...but this stuff definitely doesn't like being on my hair.

Sorry I read this wrong. You know, I think its the hydroxyethylcellulose that is causing your issues. CIAB doesn't do it as bad but I used another gel that was just hydroxyethylcellulose and aloe and it had the worst flaking and white residue I've ever seen. Pattern Pusha was pretty bad, too, but I kind of expected it given the ingredients.

Sorry you are having that trouble....I do use CIAB and have never noticed any sort of flaking or residue. Could it be a bad batch? I've used it alone/ and also in combination with a stronger hold gel/ also with AVG and have had no problems. Hope you figure out what the problem is. It's a good products from all I know of it.

CalamityM...your hair is absolutely gorgeous! Sure wish I had those kind of ringlets, but I'm more curly/whirly/wavy so far.

I experienced this too with both CIAB and the new Pattern Pusha but I couldn't figure out why.

i think many of us use curls in a bottle as a serum so just a small amount on top, rather than as a gel. i also think it could be due to what leave in and how much. i only once had residue, not with ciab tho, and i had changed my leave in that day to ss dd, was not a good combo.
i've been using pattern pusha for over two weeks and have not had any problems, no matter what leave in i use with it.
so if you are looking for a gel, you might want to try cjpp. try using the curls in a bottle as a serum.

It might be technique, at least in my case. After my hair is dry I like to shake it out at the roots for volume and this breaks up the cast any gel makes. the flaking is worse when the weather is dry, and I think leave ins might contribute to the problem as they mimimize absoption.

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! Yesterday I made a HUGE list of all the products I have used in my hair including the ingredients. Comparing ingredients I think the only new one is the hydroxyethylcellulose. That's probably what is causing my hair the problem. It's too bad because the Curls in a Bottle was awesome...except for the yucky residue. I use Curl Keeper and it's perfect in my hair...except doesn't always have the hold I'm after so I'm on a quest to find something light weight (but with more hold) that I can add when I need it. I appreciate everyone's help!

I agree! I'm sorry that it didn't work for me, but I'm glad that I was able to figure out why. Now I know to avoid hydroxyethylcellulose in the future.
