Seriously is there a secret to "scrunching out the crunch" that no ones telling me?!

It takes me forever to do it and my hair is still kinda crunchy. I have to go section by section and really put some muscle in it to get the crunch out. But I love the way gel makes my hair behave especially in the winter when I don't use glycerin. Do you use a refresher or a curl towel or something? Or can you rec some non crunchy gels? So far I have LA looks gel and jessicurl rockin ringlets (basically FSG) If it matters, I'm a 3b/c.

Rub a little bit of oil or a pomade on your hands before scrunching out the crunch. It helps me a lot.

I'm learning that hair porosity makes quite a difference to how gel reacts once on the hair. I have very fine hair that's low porosity. I have been using Curl Keeper for years but I find that on me it's TOO easy to scrunch the crunch out. I grab my hair once and squish it and ....bam. No more slightly firm gel feelings. This sucks for me though because I need some kind of hold. Sometimes it feels like my curls will blow apart in a slight breeze.

What my low porosity hair needs is gel with serious hold. It feels like a twig once my hair dries but I can easilly scrunch out the crunch with minimal effort, resulting in great curls that actually have some backbone. (The gel with firm hold I'm experimenting with is Biosilk's "Rock Hard Gelee".

What kind of hair do you have? From what you described I suspect that you'd probably do well with the runny light hold gel that I sometimes get frustrated with. Have you tried curl keeper? Also, check to make sure that your gel doesn't have any protein in the ingredients. My hair seems to love this, but if you're hair is protein sensitive this could be causing it to dry way too crunch for your liking.

I like to use a little leave-in or curl cream to SOTC. It really helps get rid of the crunchies while adding a little extra moisture and volume.

I scrunch while diffusing - the heat seems to help.
