Ficcare Maximas Clips - for the hair challenged?

I am not that great (yet) at whipping together awesome -or even just good - hair updo's. My signature casual look on hot days consists of a ponytail + an elastic. When I am wearing my hair out I do my whole curly routine and just bounce around as is.

Sometimes special situations call for a certain amount of refinery and elegance - something that my plain old ponytail just can't provide. This year I am making it my mission to learn new ways to style my hair . Sadly, I don't yet have good intuition when it comes to knowing where/how to place what regarding accessories. (Bobby pins are a no go with me.) My hair is thick but VERY slippery so my hair likes to slither out of most clips. I have tried many times, followed many "how to" guides, but I am still waiting for my "Ah Ha!", now my updo rocks, moment. I usually just give up in frustration.

Now, I am in desperate need of some idiot proof accessory recommendations. I have already ordered a Flexi-8 hair clip - it was hard to ignore the rave reviews online. (I already purchased some Spin Pins and several sets of hair sticks.)

Any other practically foolproof recommendations? I have read about Ficcare Maximas hair clips - but would they really stay in slippery hair? My ponytail circumference is 3.5 inches - would I need a medium size then?

Anyway, thanks so much if you're read this far! I will be blogging about this in the Summer and am trying to come up with a roster of products to experiment with over the next few months.

I have a small but growing collection of Maximas clips that I use CONSTANTLY. My hair is very slippery and yes, they hold! My circumference is almost 4 and I have shorter hair than you do and I already have to use a large so you may want to go that route instead. I usually do a peacock twist with them, throw the clip in and VOILA an easy, quick updo that stays!

An easy tip I learned with bobby pins:

If I need to place a bobby pin, I will use 2 instead of one, making an "x" with them. They really stay in place that way.

It all depends on how/where you are placing the pins, but hopefully this tip helps a little. They don't fall out AT ALL.

You said you are a "no" to bobby pins? Any reason why? If it's just because they don't hold, have you tried criss-crossing them? That usually works.

Also, if your hair is secured by some other clip or elastic, the weight is therefore not an issue for the bobby pins, and they can be used alone or in crossed pairs to hold some curls in place.

I see you already have spin pins - LOVE THEM!!!

It depends a lot on the length of your hair, but some simple updos can look fabulous on curly hair! My hair is too long for this one now, but I used to put my hair in a really high pony, then just pin the curls down to my head so they didn't bounce around too much. (you can get away with longer hair on this if you have layers. Sometimes you can pin the longer bits up underneath, if needed.) I got compliments on it all the time, and it took all of 3 mins to do!

Another is of course the French twist. I will twist it up, leave the ends hanging, put a clamp at the top (it's under the length that is left hanging, so it doesn't show), and spin pin the twist itself. Sometimes I'll stick a large bobby pin or two just above the clamp for security. I do this updo all the time. It also takes 3-5mins. You can pin random curls as needed, and doing so in different ways can make it look more or less formal.

The last one is the looped pony - but your hair needs to be past should length for it to work. I will do it either high or low, depending on the look I want, or how bad my crown hair looks - ha! Do the looped pony (the one where the second wrap of the pony you only pull halfway through the elastic), but do it so the length falls ON TOP. Then you can spin pin/bobby pin/whatever the loop in place, and pin the fall of hair as needed for the look you want to achieve. (if your hair is long enough, you can put a clamp above the loop to help hold the length in place.)

I hope that helps!! Ask questions - I'm sure I didn't always explain those well! Haha!

Thanks guys! My hair is just touching my shoulders right now. I cut it a long while back rather short (what was I thinking <sob>) but I'm currently growing it back long again. I figure in a year or so I'll be back to the way I was in the pictures.

rymorg2: So your hair is short but you're already in the large Ficcare maximas territory? Maybe it would be more economical for me to grab a large then. I certainly don't want hair products that I can't keep using given that these are expensive. I love how elegant they look - I think if I got a black and a colorful one I'd be good to go. (Question: Do those teeth damage your hair at all? They look shark like! )

Regarding my ineptitude with bobby pins. I think it's knowing where in your hair to put them to secure the hair that I struggle with. I have a friend of mine who did an updo for me using just a few and it was freaking incredible. I was stunned at how she knew how to shape my hair and where to clip what. I was totally in awe of her skill. I also end up pulling out a lot of hair when I carefully try to remove them. Maybe I would benefit from a step by step book.

Ficcares are a hot commodity . I bought a medium Maximus off of a swap board from the long hair community and I absolutely LOVE it!! My hair is medium thickness and waist length. For me I find that the medium ficcare is good for all kinds of styles... especially for those twists where you would have hair spilling over from the top or half up half down styles. I'll use it in a bun but secure it through half of it and it seems to hold well. Now if I want the entire bun inside the ficcare then I will have to go with a large.

I hear you on the bobby pins. I can use them (hee hee....stylist territory) but I prefer not to because cheap metals bother my scalp. I guess the sterling silver plating protects me from that with ficcares.

eta...our hair is about the same length; mine is past my shoulders when straight and when it's curly it's laying on them.
