I know it's been asked before, but...

I'm hoping to get some opinions/advice. I'm looking to get a curly hair cut and I'm trying to decide between a Deva Cut and a Ouidad Carve and Slice.

My hair is a bit past my shoulders after accounting for shrinkage, between APL and BSL when wet, and is cut in long layers. My curls move between 2c and 3a. The ends have some damage from previous color, so porosity is a little on the higher side. My hair texture is medium, possibly a bit on the fine side, but I have a lot of hair. (see pics)

I am flexible about the length, as long as I can still get my hair into a good, secure ponytail (martial arts 4-5 days/wk). I'm looking for a cut that will make the most of my curls. I don't straighten my hair, so I don't need to worry about how my hair would look straightened.

I would love to hear some thoughts on this...

I don't have either type of salon around here.
I think getting a personal recommendation is more important than anything.
Be sure to convey your needs to your stylist and make sure she understands and can do it.
From what I've been reading, you do NOT want an Ouidad cut. Her technique tends to leave hair looking stringy and uneven. IMO, the name "carve and slice" sounds terrifying, haha! The only positive reviews that I've seen were from people with very thick hair. BUT I haven't had personal experience, I've only seen other people's reviews... so.

But as for Deva, I've actually gotten one of their cuts! It definitely looked nice, my hair curled and clumped very well. TBH, I think you only need one or two Deva cuts to give your hair shape and help you learn what cuts look best. I don't think they're worth getting on a regular basis. I was happy with my $70 cut, learned what kinds of cuts looked good, and have moved on. Deva makes a good starting point.

I've had both types of cuts. I'm a wavy and the Deva cut was way better for my hair type. I think the Ouidad cuts are more suited for people with stronger curl patterns (3a or more).

That being said, I haven't gone back and gotten either of these cuts again. They are way too expensive IMO and they don't give me drastically better results than a traditional haircut, which is what I do right now.

If you live in the NYC area you can sign up to be a Ouidad hair model and get a free cut. It's a fun experience. I did that a couple of years ago and Ouidad herself stuck her fingers in my hair!
Sort of CG sometimes, but not really
2B, medium? normal porosity and elasticity?

Thank you so much for the feedback!!

I live in Dutchess County, NY, so NYC is definitely not outside the realm of possibility, especially for a free haircut!

I think I'll probably wait until I get my official curl analysis results back so I know for sure what my hair properties are so I can make the best decision. Yep, I really do over-think everything
