I need some advice for my hair!! (pic)
I'm new here, I've just found this message board while surfing the net.
Anyways, I was the lucky child who inherited my mother's curls, but at the moment I'm unhappy with the way they look. The thing is, I have no idea what type of shampoo I should be using. I have been using cheapo grocery store brand shampoos and conditioners since I was little (suave, VO5, etc.)
I was wondering if any of you could help me out by reccomending me some products? My biggest complaints is that my hair gets extremely frizzy and the top of my head is always flat!! If I could have anything I just wish that my hair would curl all the way up to the roots. I would also love my curls to be more spiraly if that's possible. I've been trying to look at some products myself but I have no idea where to start! There's so many to choose from...
Here is a picture of my hair from a few months back:
Thank you everyone!! :D
Your hair looks very pretty and curly. Do you brush it? That can disrupt the curl pattern a lot.
Another tip is don't dry your hair by rubbing it with a rough towel after you get out of the shower. It creates frizz and disrupts the curl pattern. Some people gently diffuse the roots while their heads are upside down so take the weight off their curls and elimate flattness. Others gently blot their hair dry with a soft tshirt or microfiber towel- something that wont hurt the hair. Some just let their hair air dry and try not to disturb it at all until it is completely dry.
A lot of people here, including me, use the Curly Girl method, which means they don't use shampoos with sulfates in them, and no conditioners with silicones. Silicones coat the hair causing build up and limp, gross hair and requiring a sulfate to wash out. Sulfates are detergents and very harsh on your hair. Using these two ingredients can cause a cycle of crappy hair days. You can research this and lots and lots and LOTS of other advice by looking through the forums here, and searching for terms that intrest you that you want to know more about. Good luck!
Yes, I do brush my hair. I usually take a shower at night so by morning it's all crazy so I do have to brush it. I don't brush it until the morning after though.
Thank you so much for all of your advice! I had no idea that rubbing with a towel created frizz. I have also just learned about the Curly Girl method. I will try it today and see what happens :)
Thanks for all your help!!
Your welcome :) . While messing with your hair(with your hands) is okay once it is dry, brushing it at any time can really mess it up. Some people here prefer to use a wide toothed comb in the shower when it is soaking wet and has a lot of conditioner on it. I don't use a brush or comb, though.
Second, I had the same problem with flatness at the roots and I've been experimenting with some different ways of solving it. Difusing upside down at the roots really helps me. Also, I never thought I could shower at night since when I sleep my hair gets all messed up like you described. I've started putting it up in a very high ponytail on the top of my head (I found that recommended on this site) with a satin scrunchy before bed, and in the morning when I take it down the curls are still there and sometimes looking even better. You could try that to eliminate brushing altogether.
