How do I get my permed hair back to it's natural curls?

I'm new here at naturallycurly.com !

I've been putting perm in my hair for about 3-4 years (i know,

i know) since I was going for the very straight look. I am african american, I have very

THICK hair which is also good and bad! I really want my curls back though, so I can wear my thick hair back into it's natural curls.

What are some ways that I can get my hair back into it's original form? Without shaving it away in the process! Please give me feedback, thanks! I'm looking for the fastest ways

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to make your perm go back to your natural curls. All you can do is wait for your hair to grow out natural from the root and eventually cut off the relaxed ends. You can either transition to your natural hair over a period of a few months to years or you can let it grow a little and just do a 'big chop' (basically cutting all your relaxed hair off at once and rocking a short cut)

(first of all thank you answering my question!)

So how long do you think it would take since i have thick hair? Basically your saying I should just let my hair grow out and then cut it very short? And also, how can I tell my natural hair coming from the roots, to my permed hair?

The thickness of your hair doesn't matter when growing out a relaxer. The average rate of growth for hair is 1/2 inch per month. So you can estimate 2 - 3 years of no relaxer to have your natural curls back to the length of your hair right now. If you don't want to transition for that long, dealing with having both textures, you can transition for a shorter period of time and then cut the relaxed end off leaving a TWA (teeny weeny Afro).

As far as telling the difference between the two textures, you will definitely know. Once you stop getting relaxers, any hair that grows is new growth and will be your natural hair.

There is no quick fix. Once you relax your hair, you have chemically altered that hair forever. And there is no chemical way to reverse it. The only thing that works is time.

I suggest watching YouTube videos on transitioning to natural hair. There is also a transitioning thread here. You can find out everything you need to know to get started transitioning just by googling and YouTube.

Hi OP,
if you are still around, assuming that your hair has average growth then you can expect 10-12 inches of hair in a couple of years. As the previous posters have said, you have to grow your hair out to get rid of the relaxer. You don't have to BC, you can transition wait for a decent amount of your natural hair to grow in before you cut your relaxed ends off.
