Default I'm keeping my hairsecrets to myself from now on!!

Ok, here's the story:
I live in Norway, but my parents are Indian immigrants.
Norwegians LOVE my indian hair & strangers in the street ask me for my hairsecrets.

When I tell them that I wash every 4. or 5.th day, they all think it's really gross!! They say that I'm unhygenic (sp?) & even girls in my class spread a rumour about this!!
I probably shouldn't tell them that I dont wash my face with water (only tissue-off cleanser).& I wonder what they would say about CO-washing.
People here wash every day with silicone shampoos & it's hard to find products with no cones.

I feel like I'm the crazy one. Should I just lie & tell them I wash every day & they will be pleased?
It's NOT fun when classmates think I have lice, just because I wash every 4.or 5.th day!!

I agree just tell them it's a secret and leave it at that.
I say I use a cream cleanser. I really do use no poo and technically that's what it is.
As for the rest of the routine I just say all I do is treat my hair gently and the rest is genetics

I don't blame you! Sorry you have to go through that. Hygeine is super-important in the U.S. culture, too. I wash my hair every other day because that's all it needs. My scalp is dry and our winter weather makes it very dry. I also only take a shower every other day, though I sponge bath those bacteria prone areas on no-shower days. It really helps my skin and scalp. My legs are all flaky and I itch at night as it is!

No one has ever asked my secrets - I've only had a compliment or two once in a while cause my hair is pretty ordinary. I'd be hesitant to tell people that i only wash it every other day, though, just because not washing your hair or taking a shower every day sounds like bad hygeine to most people. I don't understand the obsession with cleanliness.

Thanks for your replies so far...

I have decided to say that I use mild cleansers & don't say anything about how often I wash it. & if they ask I'll just say "whenever I need it.."

It's just weird to be questioned about if I only shower every 4. or 5.day too!! I shower every night & have what I consider very good hygieneroutines!!

Refer them to this site if they are a curly.
Straight haired people don't "get it" We are gross.
I am along the lines of you. I fully wash my hair as needed.

Ugh, I get this in my own house. I'm not even on CG, I just don't shampoo every day, more like twice a week. I also, like CurlyMireya, don't shower every single day becaue my body can't take it, but wash the important places in between. My little brother, with straight hair he shampoos in the shower every single day, has the nerve to keep insisting that I am dirty and he has way better hygiene than me! I'll tell him that my hair would be super dry if I washed it every day, it would probably fall out, the human body isn't naturally dirty, etc. but when I tell him how drying it would be he says "So you'd rather be soaking in oil?" I am nowhere near oily, he just assumes because I don't shampoo everyday I am gross. I think his ignorance is a big reason I'm glad I'll be moving out for college next schoolyear.

People are not very smart sometimes. Did you think I was gross before I said I hadn't washed my hair in three days? Newp. I smell good! When people ask my haircare secrets, I just act coy and say I got lucky with the genes. It would take way too long to describe exactly what I do and don't do and no one's really interested anyway.

I'm sorry to hear how ignorant people are! When I told my friends I only washed twice a week (at that) they had a look of disgust, but when they realised my hair looked good for it, they stopped pestering.

My straight haired friend was like "you CONDITION every TIME! what a WASTE!" luckily another curly was there and backed me up that conditioner is an essential for curly hair. i just imagined her poor straight hair being shampoo'd (with head and shoulders, strong stuff) then no conditioner - ICK!

i'd probably not mention your washing either way - as I wouldnt want to lie incase they try and imitate what you do, but to avoid criticism just say "thanks! it takes a lot of work!" and maybe give them a few ideas like using 'certain types of conditioner that will keep my curls frizz free' etc.

and you KNOW you've got great curls and they aren't dirty so shame on them!

Tell them lice is attracted to clean heads and they are in more danger of getting those nasty buggits than you are!!

Actually, when I told my older sister and older cousin I quit shampooing, they replied that they've never shampooed every day. This is our generation that has succumb to marketing--shampoo is needed everyday--read the bottle, they want you to lather twice! Not only did I shampoo everyday, I left it in while I showered! Now I shampoo twice a week with a mild shampoo and rinse out right away! I compare it to women shaving their legs--invented by men selling razors:-)

LOL! Funny that I read this right before going into the bathroom to shave my legs.

Wow, some people are so rude. Sometimes just to shock people (some people) I tell them I don't shower every day. I don't feel compelled to tell them about my half showers! I don't smell so what do they care? I do break down and wash my hair more than I'd like, every 2 or 3 days, but I'm going to try for longer.

I only wash my hair once a week and sometimes go for longer. As long as you don't smell...who cares? There is no need to tell everyone your exact routine.

You have to see the faces of people when I tell them I shampoo twice a year!
