I overconditioned.... help?
My hair is usually pretty dry, but now I seem to have gone a bit overboard with the moisturizing treatments and my hair is all mushy/stretchy, you know the deal. Just at the ends, really. What are some good and relatively inexpensive ways to add a bit of protein quick?
My hair type is high porosity, but I think I'm somewhere between protein-sensitive and protein-craving -- the balance is hard to achieve, my hair is pretty temperamental and a tiny bit too much of either one will make my hair weak or rough. Lucky me, I know.
Oh and I live in a dorm right now, so the egg thing isn't really do-able. I would make a mess that my roommate wouldn't be too happy about x)

Oh, by the way, prior to this I thought my hair was coarse and thick but I found out recently that the hairs themselves are pretty fine, there's just TONS AND TONS AND TONS of them. So I think I misjudged my hair's dryness.
Oh and for what it's worth, it feels like there's buildup on my hair but there can't be, because I sulfate washed any buildup out two weeks ago and none of my products now contain ANY cones - I double checked.
My products currently are Burt's Bees Super Shiny conditioner every other day and Suave Naturals Coconut every other day (or every other time I wash it), and LA Looks Sports Gel right out of the shower before I plop. And it seems that my hair is getting less curly and more beach wavy. It still looks good and is pretty unfrizzy, but it feels limp and a little bit weak and that worries me.

Oh I forgot - the over conditioning was from using GFTN Dryness Reversal Treatment on my hair. Went way overboard there.

I was just wondering this morning how you did with the build-up. I'm sorry to read about the overconditioning. I know from my own experience that I couldn't use the Suave naturals- it left my hair feeling pretty gunky. I also know that for a lot of wavies, co-washing alone doesn't work and they rotate in a low-poo. So that might be two possibilities to look at.
I'm guessing if the egg recipes won't work for a quick PT that IAGirl's gelatin PT is probably out of the question, as well. Do you have a Sally's nearby? They have a GVP Reconstructing Conditioner that works well as a cheap and easy PT.

a) maybe use some mayo? I don't see why it should be messy or any of your dorm-mate's business as long as you clean up after.
b) build up isn't only from cones. If your hair is fine, maybe the products you're using are too heavy for your hair (I'm not familiar with them unfortunately) or maybe a shampoo every 2 weeks is too infrequent.
c) If you're in between protein sensitivity and craving, maybe regular use of products with small amounts of protein would work best for you.

I haven't heard of the GFTN product you used but if you have fine hair the oils probably didn't help.
Second the Sallys idea. You can get a product called Neutral Protein filler (I think that's the name) and add a few drops to your rinse out conditioner.
Or you could just PM IAgirl here on the forum. She's my go to person for many questions!

I do have a Sally's nearby so I'll check that out.
I could try the egg thing I guess, the only issue being that there's no really good space for me to do that here, like a counter or anything like that. Hmmm. I guess I'll have to stop using the Suave naturals, it's only made my hair feel weird so far. I gave it a change.

I haven't tried the Burt's Bees stuff. I prefer really light conditioners if I co-wash. The ones that worked best for me are tresemme Naturals radiant moisture, GF pure clean, and KCKT. Generally I try to stick to cleansing conditioners instead- I just read some really good reviews of Curls Cleansing Cream if you weren't thrilled with the L'Oreal stuff. I still find that I need to use low-poo once in a while. My hair needs moisture, but my roots really don't.

My hair is silky and not weak today, and I'm pretty sure it's because I did a tiny bit of low-poo on only my roots while I conditioned the ends with my usual Burt's Bees stuff. I think I was getting buildup from something, but I'm not exactly sure what.
I think my hair was coarse-feeling from all the dye jobs I gave it in the past and now as it starts to get really healthy, all the crap is coming off the shafts of the hair and the fine texture of my hair underneath is being revealed, so now I can't use as much product as I did before without it feeling gunky.

Oh also I didn't use any gel at all, so although I did get a bit of frizz because I touched it (I couldn't resist, it was SO SOFT) my hair actually feels better. My hair just seems to defy all logic! I'm a wavy but my hair hates gel, I guess.

It could be the type of gel also- I know the LALSG seems to get mixed reviews from people. My most recent discovery is Biotera gel (at Sally's). It's a thinner consistency than the LALSG, but it's still a firm hold. I think I like it even better than the CJPP I was hooked on before.

I agree with Corrina, it might have to with the gel; I had terrible results with LALSG. I personally like the Biotera Gel, AG Re:Coil (a curl cream/activator), and KCCC; none of them weigh down my hair and I top it off with a bit of BRHG.

LALSG worked wonders for me at first, which is why I'm so surprised by it making my hair feel so gross now. But oh well, back to the drawing board, as it were.

I didnt read through the rest of the posts, but have you low pooed? That may help to get rid of build up. (apologize if this was already suggested)
