Is hair gel necessary?

Does anyone have success with not using gel?

I am new to this and until the last couple of days I haven’t had much success. My hair looked stringy instead of wavy. Then I read about the super soaker method and a light bulb went off. I realized I needed a base to get my curls to form. So I’ve been applying LI and Crème Brulee in the shower while my hair is soaking wet. I then plop while it is soaking and then after about 10 minutes, I plop again for 15-20 minutes. Then I let it air dry. When it is almost dry I scrunch it and the volume picks up. I can even mist it and get more volume.

When my hair dried, it was soft and full of volume and pretty waves. Since I am still experimenting, I decided to try the gel today. Maybe I used too much, put it looks like it broke up the clumping.
I am still having some experimenting to do. I have to figure out whether to comb or not, how long to plop, to double plop, etc.
I may try again with a little bit less gel but I am thinking gel may not work for me. Or maybe I need to apply gel after I plop? I would love to hear what works for you.
i dont use it daily, i might use it if im going out and i want somthing more defined, but apart from that, i dont use it. my hair looks fine with out it i think.

my hair: 3c, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

I also blog about my hair journey, please feel free to read and comment/ask questions http://www.naturallycurly.com/blogs/...air-blogs/2494
That depends on your hair type. I use a lot of gel, but I have 3c/4a hair. To make it more curly than soft and bushy, I have to use a lot of gel.

If you can get nice curls without gel, then don't use it. It's one more thing you don't have to buy, but gel is definitely necessary for some of us curlies.
in my first month of going CG I didn't use any gel, and thought my hair was better w/o it, since it kept getting stringy. My curls w/o gel are just fluffier, and some of the fine hair around my face won curl at all. So, if you don't think you need it then don't use it. You'll save some $$$ too!

I usually alternate between gel and curl cream. I usually prefer the more polished look less frizz look. Plus for me stylers help my hair hold up to the weather a little better. However there have been times I just used leave in and a little oil.

Some curlies use mousse but I don't like it.
I only use a curl cream! SheaMoisture Curl Milk. It gives me big, soft waves that I love. My hair likes gel, too, but I'm more into the soft look right now. Gel doesn't need to be part of your routine, I vote stick with what works best!

LOW-POO: Renpure Organics

I'd love to find a curl cream that works on my little curls, but for now it's gel.
