Question is it just me?

So I'm not sure if this is just how my hair is or what, but after I take a shower and let my hair air dry, my hair is flat (not curly wise) and lacks in volume. Before it's completely dry I have to hit it up with my diffuser for a minute or two for it to actually look normal. Is my hair missing something? Too much of something?

I admit I have not been very nice to my hair. I've colored it A LOT and have stripped the color twice since August of last year. I guess you could say I'm in recovery. I'm pretty sure this could have something to do with how my hair is acting now, but to be honest it's doing a lot better than I would have thought. April 14 will be 3 months since I last put color on my hair.

P.S. - I'm trying my best not to use heat ( blow dryer, straightener). My hair just does not look good with out some to a lot of diffusing.

I have the same problem. But the volume I get from diffusing doesn't last long and then it gets pretty flat again, as if I didn't diffuse. I really wish I could have really big voluminous hair. But I think the problem is having fine hair. Because fine hair lays flat and close to your head unlike other hair types. I noticed you have fine hair as well (from your signiture) so I'm guessing that is the problem for both of us.

I'm with you on diffusing bringing your curls to life. I find I have to diffuse because if I air dried totally, my curls would just rebel, refuse to appear and I'd be left with dull, flat, lifeless hair. I know a lot of people air dry first, diffuse last, but what works for me is diffusing from wet (after applying product) to 60-70% dry, once my curl pattern has formed and 'set' and then leaving to air dry until it's 'dry'. I can then SOTC and I'm good to go. As long as I get regular trims, my hair doesn't seem to suffer too much heat damage.

My hair is also like that right now. I won't let it air dry if I need to go somewhere because it's flat and ugly, imo. But I think it's from the weather. Gross dry, cold wintry weather does nothing good for my hair. In the summer I can air dry and have great hair.

Have you guys tried clipping the roots? I find that gives me some volume and even helps it dry faster.

When I diffuse, I usually "set" it with HESMU spray gel to help hold it in place.

Whoops! I should have said I use it AFTER diffusing (and some underneath just before I finish diffusing), almost like a hairspray.

The weather here in Alabama is always humid year round. When I diffuse my hair I can get a lot of volume and it normally stays all do long. My hair isn't long either, just above my shoulders. I can even sleep on my hair after drying it/diffusing it. It'll still have its volume if not more when I wake up in the morning.

i'm considering trying to do a protein treatment. would that be a good idea or not so much? could it help with volume?

Yes, clip the roots! My hair does the same flat thing. So I diffuse a bit upside down then flip back up when the curls seems set and I bunch up-lift up parts of hair at the roots, holding them in place with clips until they are totally dry.

I personally have not clipped, but from what other wavies and curlies have said, it is very helpful with volume. As far as protein, you should benefit from it if you have find hair or even medium textured hair. I'm not sure if it adds to volume, but you should see your hair get nicer (my waves get more defined and last longer). Hope that helps somewhat.

I attempted clipping the roots, but it really didn't work for me. Maybe I did it wrong? It seems no matter what, I'm going to have to diffuse it for a couple minutes. Once I have volume, I have volume. My hair can acually get pretty big and stay that way.

Also, what kind of PT do I need to try for my first one? And if you're hair is protien sensitive, how will the hair react. Like will it be straw like, dry, frizzy, greasy?

As soon as I started reading this thread, I thought protein treatment. Protein really helps me with tightening my curl, volume and reducing frizz. I do at least one PT a week and use a lot of products with protein.

The other thing to try is to diffuse for a few minutes upside down. I do it long enough to help "set" my curls.

Last, but not least, is a good haircut. It's the foundation for great hair. Your hair isn't long, so it's not the weight pulling it down. Having the right layers really helps me with volume and "shape."

Kathymack, what kind of products do you use and how do you do your PTs?

I'm not sure how my hair likes proteins yet.

I too get the pyramid (flat on top, big on sides). I've found using duckbill clips on sectioned wet hair, applying gel section by section and then diffusing upside down until 75% dry, then letting the rest air dry works wonders.
My curls don't last much past day two so I need to do some experimenting with products.

I'm a product slut, to be sure. Most of my current favorites are in my signature. For me, rotating products is really important. I wet, use a rinse out and style every day. Seldom using any one product more then every five days. I usually have at least 50 products in my arsenal--and switch things up based on season/dewpoint. My hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique companies.

I rarely do homemade treatments (occasionally IAgirl's PT.) Can't stand my hair smelling like food all day--cherryloa's PT that was yogurt and amino acids comes to mind. Smelled like sour milk and teriyaki marinade all day. I do at least one PT a week and use a lot of products with protein. I use moisturizing PTs, such as CJ Repair Me and SS Protein Repair. I spray my hair with water and put on the PT. Occasionally, I'll sit under my hard hat dryer for 10 minutes. Otherwise, I leave it on for at least 15 minutes. I use a moisturizing rinse out, but no DT.
