Questions about homemade FSG

I need some help from the experts about FSG

I've been making and using my own FSG for about 6 months, and it's been my everyday styler for that long with really great success. My hair loves it; in fact, when I switched back to my other HG, MOP C-Curl Def Cream, just to shake it up and get some variety, my hair wasn't very happy and I could tell the difference.

Anyway, my hair still loves the FSG, but I am seeing a few little things I'd like some help with. First, I am getting flakes with the FSG. I'm assuming its the FSG because my hard hold gel I use over it (Aussie Instant Freeze) is one I've been using for about 2 years and I never had a flake problem.
Which of these additives would flake in the FSG: magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) - I use about 1/2 Tb per 1/2 c flax seeds; glycerin - I use about 1 Tb.; grapeseed oil - about 1 1/2 Tb.; honey - about 1 Tb.

The other problem is frizz on 2nd day hair. First day, no frizz at all. 2nd day, major frizz. Actually, in general my hair is alot drier on 2nd day. I finger-style with damp palms/fingers and a tiny bit of conditioner to reactivate the curls and that works really well. I get great curl and wonderful volume and definition.
I was using SSCEJ but I was getting frizz and no definition when I did that, so I stopped using CEJ and went to the other method and it works a ton better. Except for the frizz. I sleep with a satin cap, so that helps; when I just pinappled I was getting tangles and messy hair I couldn't do anything with.

I appreciate any help/suggestions, etc. Thanks, guys!! I am loving the FSG, it's become almost a HG. If I can solve these little problems, it would def. be a HG product, esp. given that it's dirt cheap, and I'm on a skin-tight budget

Hey there,

I have never used FSG so can't help there, however, I have used Aussie Instant Freeze and did get white flakes with certain leave ins, or from product that was already in my hair...Just thought I would throw that out there.

The FSG I make is pure flax seed with nothing added but a drop or two of sage essential oil and it sometimes flake mostly at the front where my hair is shorter. I figured it was because I put too much but I'd like to see what others will say...

As for second day hair, it does get frizzy and I just re-wet it slightly with my fingers and a bit of water and FSG.

Interesting. Did you get alot of flakes? I have been using the Aussie for a long time, and over other products and never noticed any flaking. I only noticed flaking over the FSG, so that's why I figured it was the FSG doing the flaking. It could be the Aussie, but I just didn't think it was.
I'm noticing a little bit of flaking, but if I rub the hair shaft, it will flake alot. Quite alot, that's why I was wondering if you got alot of flakes with your Aussie.

I'm going to try my FSG under a different gel and see if it flakes. Thanks for the heads up about the Aussie.

If anyone else has some feedback about the ingredients in the flax seed gel, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!!!!

I did get a lot of flaking. Wait, I take that back...It was more of a white coating. I can't remember what I had in my hair to start (which stinks) but I remember smoothing in some IF on dry-ish hair and I had a white coating left. I do remember I used IF with MD CSC and it was fine.

I've been researching old posts on FSG since I am a new convert. I love it. I looked at your ingredients and the first thing that jumped out at me was the amount of mag sulfate you are using. You don't mention how much water you use for your recipe. The recipe I read recently called for 1/8 tsp. mag sulfate in 2 cups of water... a lot less than you are using I think.

It would stand to reason that the white flakes are coming from the mag sulfate since it is in the form of white crystals before you dissolve it in water. Also, you don't mention when you are adding it. I think you are supposed to add it to the water you boil the seeds in.

Hope this helps.
It could be the mag sulfate. I didn't realize the amount should be as little as 1/8 tsp. I wonder if that's enough to get any benefit? I'd need someone who uses that amount regularly to tell me if they see any benefits from it.

Oh, I almost forgot. To the best of my knowledge, you should NOT add anything in during the boiling process. All additives should be introduced when the gel is sloughed off the seeds. In other words, whisk it into the hot gel. They'll dissolve into the gel at that point. Search this board for the thread on making FSG and the information on when to put additives in will be in there.

I'm using the standard formula for homemade FSG: 1/2c seed per 2 c water. It's the formula that has been standardized here on NC.

So I used a different gel over my FSG yesterday, and I didn't get any flakes - which means it could be the Aussie gel. However, I got awful hold because the gel I used had no hold at all. I was not at all happy about that. I can't get 2nd day hair at all today, and am going to have to start all over again today. I don't like to wash and dry my hair so often. But at least I'll see if I get flakes from the Aussie today! In my next batch of FSG, which I'll make later today or maybe tomorrow, I'll try 1/8 tsp. of mag sulfate. I also bought some marshmallow root to steep and use the water for boiling the flax seeds in, and I'm excited to try that, and I am going to try adding a pinch of protein, just for fun. I think the marshmallow root will help cut down on the 2nd day frizz, too.

I love trying new things with my FSG. I just want to get rid of the flakes.

I totally agree about the additives except for the mag sulfate. I'm sure it can be done both ways. I actually have read almost all the old threads on FSG and copied/pasted all the tips I came across into a new document. BotticelliBabe added it to the boil water.

There is a ton of good info out there but it sure takes a long time to read through it all.

I haven't tried the marshmallow root yet. Let us know how you like it.
I haven't read through all 27 pages of the thread on FSG, but the stuff I have read says to put the additives in after straining the seeds. Since that's the method that works best for me, that's what I'm going to stick with, and I don't think that's what causing the flaking, because I didn't get any flaking when I used the same FSG with a different gel over it.

We'll see what the marshmallow root does though. I know some other people on here have used marshmallow root too.

I only use 1/2 tsp per 2c water batch when I use mag sulfate. I swear I do different additions every time depending on supplies. I've only ever added my extra ingredients after straining the gel.

Maybe reduce the mage sulfate AuntiBubbs? It may not necessarily be the gel but the reaction the gel has to the amount of mag sulfate. *shrug*

I sometimes do an herbal infusion that I soak and use to boil my seeds. Other then that, I add ingredients to strained seeds, too. There are several comments throughout that say some ingredients are diminished by adding them when the product is too hot (preservatives certainly.) There are also some ingredients that can't be frozen (Seamollient for one.)

One really needs to be careful with the homemade concoctions. Many folks on these boards that have scientific backgrounds consistently warn of being careful about this--and about the buying products from sites like Esty where folks may not be preserving appropriately.
