Smile Favorite Cheapie Hair Gel/Gelee/Jelly?

I'm on the hunt for a new gel since humidity will soon be kicking up and mousse only works in the winter for me. I cannot afford Ouidad's Climate Control right now and I'm overwhelmed by the number of gels at the drug store, WalMart and Target.

What's your favorite?

The drugstore gels I use (I rotate between them, depnding on how my hair feels that day):

LA Looks Sports Gel and Nutra Curl
Biotera Gel (Sally's)- I love using this when I diffuse my hair because it has a thinner consistency than most other gels I have- works really well for SMasters technique.
Eco Styler (Sally's)- I only use this if I air dry- I remember not really liking the results when I diffused with it.

I know a lot of people use HETT or HSSMU, but the containers are so small that I would be buying gel every week.

I love HESMU. I also use LALSG sometimes, but I get better clumps with the Herbal Essences. I maybe use a quarter size amount on my hair. I've heard good things about Aussie Instant Freeze (AIF), and Garnier Fructis Pure Clean as well.

LA Looks Nutra Curl was a godsend last summer when the humidity was unbearably high, it was the only gel that made my hair look good. I also agree with AIF if you want a very firm hold.

There are a lot of very good drugstore/Sally's gels out there, and the nice thing is that you can get two or three items for under $10 and have fun experimenting with what really works for you!

I'd have to agree with LALSG too but I recently picked up Aussie Instant Freeze on sale at CVS and it's working well in high dews and even rain. It does get crunchy but that's fixable once it's completely dry. So far the drugstore stuff has been ok for me =)

I use LALS, HESMU, BRHG, and GFPC.

I start with FSG, go to LALS, and then add either HESMU or BRHG in small amounts for the hold.

The GFPC I will use in place of FSG (when I travel), or sometimes I'll mix it with my FSG if I need extra clumping power that day.

I sometimes use HESMU or GF spray gel. The HE as almost a hairspray, or to add hold to places if I didn't get enough product on them, the GF if I diffuse and need extra hold in the front. I'll also use it for refreshing - mix it in my palm with a little water and LI, scrunch it in. Good for SOTC, too.

I have GF curl scrunching gel and LALPS - both are ok. I will use them until they are gone, but probably won't buy them again, just because I have other gels that do the same things.

I'm sorta wanting to try AIF, just bc I hear it's good in humidity, but i don't know that it will be better than what I already have. I am really considering trying LALNC, tho... I need harder hold than what I hear it has, but I could put BRHG over it...

One of you said that it was good in humidity for you, right? What did it do for you?

Anyhow... HTH!

I've used LA Looks Sport Gel almost every day for 6-7 years. I occasionally try others but I always go back to it. Love the stuff.

I actually have a new favorite: Mixed Silk Curly Gel

I saw it on Sally's website a few weeks ago and bypassed it, because the ingredients aren't listed, and I have about a million gels already. But I was in Sally's the other day, and took a look at it, it's CG. So I bought it and the leave in. WOW, I had low expectations for the products, but they're my new fave combo. The gel is more of a gelly, and it's got a soft-feeling hold. But I live in Oklahoma, and we had sustained winds yesterday of 25 mph at least, and gusts up to 40 or 50mph, and my hair held up unbelievably well. It's also one of those products that seems like you couldn't overuse it, I used quite a bit because it didn't feel like it would have good hold, and my hair was light and fluffy, but with really good definition.

I'll post a review and pics on my blog soon. Love it!

Would you mind listing at least the first half of ingredients either on here or on your blog? I'd be curious to try this but I'd need to know the ingredients to know if my hair will like it.

I love Eco Styler Olive Oil gel. Its light, cheap, available, and it adds shine to my hair. The hold is great. I want to try aloe vera gel... Heard it gives the same hold but leaves the hair softer.

Smasters: Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for recommending the Mixed Silk Curly Gel. Spotted it in Sally's and recalled your rave so I decided to try it. Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE!!!!!!!! I have been spiraling out of control on a product buying binge over these last two weeks, and this gem brought my pj to a screeching halt! What a wonderful find! Soft, frizz free, defined waves and curls, no crunch, very nice hold! Amazing!!!

Does the Mixed Silk enhance your curls at all? I'm looking for something to boost my waves which seem limp lately

I like Aussie Instant Freeze mixed w/ a little BRHG. I have very lazy waves and need the oomph from the BRHG to help lock my waves in place.

Mec1976: Yes, I feel like the Mixed Silk did help with curl enhancement as well. My waves and curls have been kind of wimpy and droopy lately, and seemed to kind of spring back to life with this product.

Yay!! I'm making FSG today, but i think my inner product junkie may have to make a trip to Sally's!! Do you have any other recommendations while I'm there? I saw they had a few different products in this line

Yea! I love finding new products that actually work, I have an amazing amount of products that just don't work by themselves. I get tired of all the layering. I'm so glad you like it jlpmom!

Which of these is the LEAST stiff and crunchy after it dries? Mixed Silk Curly Gel, LA Looks Sport Gel, LA Looks Nutra Curl, Aussie Instant Freeze? I am also not able to afford Ouidad Climate Control Gel (love what it does, though) anymore and am a 3a. I want curl definition, but I want my hair to be soft, not stiff and hard after my hair dries. I only use gel after I wash my hair, and use a diffuser, not on dry 2nd day hair.
Also, I noticed on Sally's website that Silk Elements has a liquid gel- anyone tried that formula?

My go-to is Bioteral Gel... it has a nice thin consistancy and is easy to spread evenly in my hair.

If I need more control/hold I go with FX Curl Booster Gel, it's thicker than I like (and has shimmer? wth?) but once you scrunch the crunch out your stuff ain't going ANYWHERE. I even get second day curls with this.
