Bobby pins and airport security
I've never had to think about this before as my hair has always been really short. It is finally long enough to pin up with a couple of spin pins and a billion bobby pins.
I'm taking a trip to California in the next few weeks, and I'm not sure what the weather is like. Plus, the plane ride will be very dry, so my hair is probably going to look like crap. I really don't want horrible hair when I see my friends, so I was thinking of pinning it up for the trip. Can I go through security with bobby pins and spin pins? Anyone else do that? I did read something about plastic bobby pins. Does anyone know where to get those on the ground? I'd hate to have to take out bobby pins, because they set off the alarm. My hair would look even worse than if I left it down.
I could pin my hair up when I get there, but I'd rather have it up so that I don't have to mess with it.

Thanks! I'll check them out. I don't have a lot of hair, so I hope they will stay in. It's short and somewhat thin. Do you know if they might work on thinnish hair?

I can't be really sure, but I'm pretty sure I've gone through the metal detectors with bobby pins in my hair without problems. Not like 50, but I think I made it through with a couple. It's been a while since I traveled, though, so I can't remember for sure.
I don't think that a moderate amount of bobby pins would set off a metal detector when underwires, and buttons and grommets (sp?) on jeans don't set it off.

This area is under construction as my hair type changed and nothing works well for me. I shampoo, I condition and pretty much have done nothing but chuck my hair in a messy bun for the past oh...year? Yeah, I'm that lazy.
No...going no-poo or CG does not work for me. It leaves me overconditioned and oily in a second no matter what I use, so that's not what's not working.

If you get enough metal ones, it can go off. Happened to my sisters after we were returning from Cali for my cousins wedding. They were Jr. bridesmaids and had left their hair how it was for the wedding (pinned up w/bobby pins) to travel, and it totally went off! They actually had to wave that little stick over my sisters heads!

Don't wear the metal bobby pins, unless you want to spend extra time going through security. They've gotten better. Instead of doing the pat down, now they just pat your head. I wear a plastic headband and get the plastic hair combs.

Good point. When I took my hair down last night, I think I counted about 15 bobby pins and two mini spin pins. I may try just bobby pins. I'm also going to look for those plastic ones.
Multicultcurly, I don't think I have enough hair for the combs, but they are a good idea for when my hair gets longer. I always seem to get pulled out of line by security. As long as my hair just gets patted, I'll be ok with it.
Thanks for all the feedback, guys!

I went through the airport with pinned hair.. I pinned curled it. This was two years again but they asked me to remove my beanie and I had to go through a body search.. It was embarrassing!! Bobby pins and tsa are terrible !!!
