So, I see FSG floating around everywhere. I finally figured out what it is a while back, but I have not had the guts to try it out...I really want to, but a lot of the threads I searched didn't have the recipies and they rambled a lot. Though I admit, I didn't really dig for it either. :]

So for all of you FSG goes. How do you make yours and what do you put in it?

You can get started reading here: No-fail flax seed gel - I finally did it...TWICE! Lots of discussion but worth reading through if you're thinking of making FSG.
3b / Fine / Low (to Med) Density / Normal Porosity & Elasticity

Currently Using [*Holy Grails*]
Cleansers: DC No-Poo / DC Low-Poo / *BaSo & ACV*
Co-Washes/ROs: CJ Beauticurls Argan & OO / DC OneC / Organicals DC Creme
Additives: *Silk Amino Acids* / Honeyquat / Fragrance Oils
LIs (found some!): KCKT / CJ Beauticurls LI / CJ Curl Assurance Smoothing Daily Condish
DTs: *Coconut Oil* rinses / *Honey*, EVOO, & DC OneC / CJ Curl Rehab
Sealer: *DM Super Buttercreme*

Goal: APL Hair
I used the recipe listed above ^^^ but threw in some fresh rosemary with the flaxseeds because I like the smell and have a ton of it growing out front. Also, I did NOT use honey (no humectants for me!).

I don't know how I feel about it, honestly. I'm trying to figure out what will work for me. It's a bit lighter hold than I like, and I can get inconsistent results. BUT, I did make some FSG curl cream this morning and liked it much better than plain FSG. FSG Curl Cream!
Again, no honey/banana for me.

Always looking for new things to toss into homemade stuff.

Interesting ... Going to make some FSG tomorrow maybe I'll try the cream instead
Finally have a routine that works

Low Poo - 2chic Avocado & Olive Oil Ultra-Moist Shampoo
Co-Wash - V05 Passion Fruit Smoothie Conditioner
RO - Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Cure Care, GVPCB
LI - KCNT
Stylers - GF Pure Clean Gel, BTZ Noodle Head, LA Looks Sports Gel, Eco Styler Krystal, KCCC (I am a product junkie )

Wash at night, add products, plop in a t-shirt overnight, then diffuse in the morning!! It is great finally getting to sleep in
FSG is the bomb for my hair. The key is to use a lot. This is especially good for those of us who have too much volume. I actually looked like I had a normal amount of hair for the first time when I used this. I was still able to get volume where I wanted it though. GREAT definition and and nice sheen which is hard to come by in my 2c hair.

If you make your own FSG, I wouldn't get too fancy the first time with additives. Keep it simple so you know what properties it has on it's own. I did add honey to my first batch and grapeseed oil. Subsequent batches had more additives and I liked my original batch better.

I read a lot of threads about it and it seems the biggest problem people had with making it was knowing when to remove it from the stove. There was one paragraph in the many threads that spelled it out best... when stirring the mixture, pause the stirring for a moment and see if the seeds suspend in the liquid instead of sinking. That's when it's time to take it off the heat. It takes 10 minutes or less so watch closely or you will get a big glob that doesn't go through a strainer.

Good luck in your experiments! I am currently experimenting with CurlyFireHorse's Co-kra gel and loving it so far.
I haven't found anything that gives me the results fsg does. I don't add anything to it and I get good hold and shine with 3-4 day hair. I like to make it thick and I agree with others that say you can be generous with it.

Actually, there are a bunch of recipes for FSG on that blog (there's a recipes page). I like thickeners and protein and oil and aloe and everything but the kitchen sink - ya' know?

Thanks! I'm excited about making this. Once I actually get some time to look over the recipes I can't wait to get started. :]

I love homemade DIY stuff. I'm a huge fan of homemade laundry soap (the powder kind), and cleaners, and EO diffusers...yup.

Ok. Now that I have got the recipe, my next questions are...

What do you put in your FSG? Additives?

Do you prefer to refrigerate or preserve?

How do you preserve it?

What do you use it with?

Let's see...

Mine has a LOT of stuff in it! But I use mine as a curl enhancer more than a gel. It goes on very wet hair, then gel goes over it!

I add corn starch, Epsom, jojoba oil, gelatin, CNPF, AVG, sometimes a little honey and/or KY (for the glycerin, mainly)... I think that's it! Lol! But it works BEAUTIFULLY!!
2c/3a/3b, Fine/med, Dense, high porous, & normal elas.

Lo-poo - Renpure Keratin, SMR, Giovanni SaS
clarifying - mix Johnson's H2T with low poo
Co-wash - Suave Nats. clar. or coco.
RO - GVPCB, Ion Eff. Care, TN.
LI - SMR, Cure Care, or RO
Seal - MO or Jojoba
DT - + honey, ACV, & EVOO to SM masque & GVPCB
PT - Gelatin!, CNPF
Styling - FSG, AIF, BRHG, LALS/PS, GF curl spray gel, SM Souffle/Smoothie, LOOB
Oils - MO!, EVOO, jojoba, GSO, SM Elixer, EVCO, VO5 Hairdressing
Jas, how much of everything do you add?

Beeduh - I posted that on a thread recently... Will try to find it!

As for the gelatin - I dissolve the cornstarch and gelatin in room temp water, then add the FSG, then all the other stuff!

Found it! Just going to paste the info here:

Though the amounts won't be exact, but I'll try to estimate!

First, I use bottled water for the whole thing.

I put about a tbsp of corn starch in a bowl, a dissolve it in about a tbsp of cool water. Then I boil the seeds for 6-7mins, and strain them into the bowl. I won't get a great strain bc the mixture is a little thick (on purpose) so I put the seeds back into the pan (with more water). Then I add some jojoba oil - maybe 1tsp or so, 1/2-1 tsp of CNPF, about 2tsp of gelatin, 1-2tsp of Epsom, about a 1/4-1/2tsp or so of honey, and 1/4-1/2tsp of ACV, and about 1/8 cup or so of AVG.

Then I strain the 2nd batch into the bowl, whisk, and pour into a bottle!

Again, all the amounts are rough estimates, but are probably pretty close.

I don't use mine for hold, just for curl enhancing and clumping. But this has been a fabulous batch!!

And I wasn't clear on the gelatin - I dissolve it just after the corn starch, and then I add some of the FSG, stir, then add the rest.

And usually if you get any clumps then can be broken apart easily.

Usually you need to put gelatin into boiling or near-boiling water and stir to get it to dissolve. I know some people who put gelatin into FSG sprinkle the gelatin over strained FSG (returned to the pan) and heat and whisk until it dissolves.

The way to get cornstarch to thicken consistently is to dissolve it in a little cold water, then add it back to strained FSG and re-heat and whisk until it thickens a little (boil, then simmer for a minute). Starches need to be cooked to thicken.

Does anyone have trouble applying FSG sometimes? It always finds a way through my fingers whilst scrunching and gets all over the tub! xP

I have a bunch of stuff about preserving FSG here, I have read such great ideas about freezing it in ice cube trays and defrosting as needed which is truly inspired. science-y hair blog: Preserving Your Homemade Hair Gels
