Does anyone know what it would do to CK if you boiled it? Would it completely break down whatever causes it to work?
CurlyFireHorse
Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 2: KCKT, KCCC, plop, KCCC, plop again, air dry
Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny
I have no idea, but I'm SOOO curious to hear how this little experiment turns out!

Don't do it.
The preservative will be deactivated, you'd probably boil off some of the propylene glycol and glycerin if you boiled it very long. I don't believe polyquaterinum-10 or PVA/PVP are heat-stable enough to boil.
Maybe nothing would happen (if you were planning to refrigerate the boiled CK) but it's hard to predict. You would not have CK any longer, you'd have something else.
Why do you want to boil it? To thicken? To use in a recipe?

ah... but it'd probably get really funky. Who knows? To experiment you could try boiling some Walgreen lube, since I hear it's very similar to CK. That way you don't waste a product.

Also, what is co-kra?? That's the 2nd time I've heard that term...

I wouldn't start boiling hair gel to remove humectants, LOL. To do it right you'd need a distillation apparatus. Not very practical for home use! Sally's has "Salon Care" gel, one or 2 of which don't have glycerin and have pretty decent hold, I understand. Most of the things in hair gel won't tolerate high temperatures - I don't know if they'd just break down immediately or change texture or what (hockey puck, anyone?) but I am pretty sure you wouldn't have "hair gel" when you're done.
Rats, now I'm really curious.

I am trying to think of new things to boil flax seed and okra in, but because of the cost of CK, I may try a cheap conditioner first.

Try adding a little glycerin to your FSG or okra gel (1/4 teaspoon per batch to start with), and maybe use a little strong hold gel over it, or blend in 3 tablespoons strong-hold gel with 3/4 cup FSG. That might be a good compromise?
Thickeners are also a good thing to work with. Arrowroot or corn starch makes the FSG a little crunchy/more hold. Xanthan gum can make it quite thick and viscous and have medium or better hold and great clumpage. 50-50 xanthan and guar gum is also good. Pectin (for sugar-free jams) works nicely too.
You can use aloe juice if your hair likes it for part of the water, or herbal tea for making your gels.
Protein makes FSG very curl enhancing if your hair likes that (Neutral Protein FIller from Sally's is superb).
I'm always trying new things.

Curl enhancing? Hmmmm... how much Neutral Protein Filler do you add to the 2Cups FSG recipe? I should try this!

My most recent experiment has been to make IAgirl's protein treatment (you rock, btw) and use the gelatin to boil the flax seeds and okra in. Just made it so haven't had a chance to see how it works.
I think I will soak the seeds overnight in CK and see what I end up without heating.

I think something like guar gum or xanthan gum, which will thicken (but slowly) if added to a room-temp liquid like CK, could also step in if the flax doesn't wow you. They'd give the gel thickness and more clumpiness. Guar is a little "softer" than xanthan, hold wise.
