If I cut my long hair? Help?

Hi everyone,

I am new on these forums but I have a curly question that I am hoping someone out there might be able to answer for me.

I have long type 2b/c hair (im not 100% sure), and I have ALWAYS kept it long, never any shorter than mid back, at the moment its more like waist length. It is not super healthy by any means, I have dry and split ends

I have been thinking about having a big chop, probably collarbone length, I really like the look of curly inverted bob's. I am absolutely terrified of cutting off all my hair but desperately feel like I need a change, also I think it'd be good for my curls to get rid of all the damaged ends.

What I would like to know is if there is any way of knowing how your curls will behave after you have a big cut like that? I know some people say their curls get super curly and others loose their curls altogether after cutting the length.

Would love any advice from all you curly experts out there

Thanks heaps

Dani

If it might help i'll try taking a photo of my hair and posting on here
I went from waist length to chin length 2 years ago (ok, not actually in one go but the last chop was a big one - I just needed to build up to it) and I have to say that even though it's more work now because I can't just put it up on days when I can't be bothered, I absolutely love it.

My hair is 3a or 3b but very frizzy and fluffy if I don't put any products on it. That's the hardest bit for me with it being short - when it was long I could either plait it when it was wet to tame it if I didn't want full on curls, or leave it alone to dry and it would be big and wavy but didn't look too bad (I was bullied a lot for my hair, I'm still trying to get over it!). But now that it's short I have to work at it everyday, there is no leaving it alone (without some kind of gunk) option for me anymore (although I am trying to find one).

Despite that though I love it. It took me 8 years to build up the courage to actually do it, but it's one of the best things I've ever done. I'm definitely not going back to long hair for a while, if I ever do. I totally recommend it.

In terms of what my curls did - I don't think it got particularly curlier, just lighter with the knock on effect you'd expect from that. But because my hair is shorter there aren't as many twists along one length of hair so I don't think it looks much curlier than when it was a couple of inches below my shoulders. My curls don't drop throughout the day now it's shorter, but that does mean they don't magically become more manageable by teatime like they used to.

The whole thing is swings and roundabouts really. I love my curls even though they also drive me mad. Short and long both have definite upsides, but pretty compelling downsides too. Be brave Dani, chop it!

I would say to try a middle ground first. I was trying to get the courage to drastically cut my hair (waist to chin) and today I cut it to about 3 inches below my shoulders. If you cut it halfway and see how your curls react, then you could decide whether to go any shorter!
My hair is 2b-3b and I haven't noticed a big difference in the curls yet, we'll see if that changes though!
HTH!
A photo might help. I can't tell from your picture if your curls are "long starters" or "short starters". If it takes a lot of length for your curl to develop, you may lose them when you cut your hair. If your curls make a complete loop in just a few inches, you may find that you get even curlier when you cut your hair, because the weight of the hair is pulling them straight.

I'd recommend cutting in stages. Emotionally, a dramatic change to your hair is more satisfying, especially if you've just gone through a big "life change" event. But in the long run, you may be happier if you do it in stages

Hair: Very fine, normal porous (Finally! Yay!), normal elasticity, loves high dew points.

Thanks girls, I think you may be right and I will have to do it in stages, how big those stages are is a different story haha, I am such a chicken. Having long hair for such a long time has made me very attached to it, like its part of my identity (what a nut I am! LOL)
Anyway, I have taken some dodgy photos on my webcam, not a particularly good curl day (2nd day hair) a bit frizzy and now early evening looking a bit worse for wear, but you get the idea

I don't think you'll know until you do it. When I started lurking on nc.com, I didn't use products. My hair was winter wavy/summer 3a. Now that I know how to take care of it--it looks like my signature picture all year around.

Last time I had really long hair was about 40 years ago! I mostly wore my hair at shoulder length soaking wet with face framing layers. Been wearing the inverted bob the last 4 or so. It's the first time in my life I feel that I have a style. I do wet, use a rinse out and style every day. It doesn't take a lot of time, but I'm retired--so it makes a difference.

You could start with a shoulder length bob--long enough to pull back to start. And work your way up. Great haircut is the foundation for everything else.

I was brave today and had the cut, BUT im not sure if im happy about it
I think I am in mourning, I feel like without the length it just looks boring....
Will have to post photos after I wash and style it properly to see what your all think...
Ahh, I think a few of us have felt like that about a haircut, especially when it is one that seems drastic and takes us out of our 'comfort zone' (I'm guilty as charged!) I think that after a few days and once it has 'settled down', and you get used to your new reflection, you'll feel differently. I bet it looks lovely when you post your pics!

Dani, I love the new cut! I chopped my hair off last summer and it was quite a shock, so I understand. But I really like that length on you, I think it looks great!!
