Default Giving co-washing another shot

I stopped co-washing my hair quite awile ago.... and I just have been so unhappy with my hair lately. With the weather in Michigan already in the 70's almost, 80's my hair just doesn't feel as soft like it did when I was cowashing before. It actually has been super dry and so has my scalp.

I had a lot of problems with co-washing because I just would end up with tons of build up on my scalp, especially in the back upper head portion.

So, I did some research and I just ordered two bottles of the V05 Vanilla Mint to start cowashing with. I actually used the Tresseme Natural on my hair yesterday and can already see a difference in my curls.... Also made a batch of FSG, but haven't used it yet.

Anyone have any suggestions on not getting so much build up with the cowashing?

How often do you cowash?

I do a bit of everything - co-wash, low-poo, clarify poo...

If I am going to wash my hair 2 days in a row, I'll co-wash that next day. If I skip a day I'll low poo. If I skip two days I'll use a bit more of a cleansing low poo. Once every couple weeks I use that heavier low-poo and mix a little baby poo with low sulfates in with it. Every once in a while I'll do a BS wash and ACV rinse.

Of course I fit my PTs and DTs in there, too!

I really just go by what my hair needs on that given day, which is sometimes dictated by my busy life!

My advice for co-washing is be sure you are getting plenty of agitation/massage on your scalp, and your hair. Detangle, rinse well, and then use a RO. If you start to feel build up, go or a low poo, or try mixing some BS with your co-wash. (follow with mixing some ACV with your RO).

I found when I was co-washing exclusively that I had to do it everyday of my hair got funky. If I wanted 2nd or 3rd day hair, I needed remove all the gels, refreshers, etc.

Good luck!!

I don't know why you would get build up unless your using conditioners with cones. I've been cowashing for a long time. Before I went CG I would get buildup and need to use shampoo. Now I just don't get buildup. I'm very careful to scrub my scalp though...

Yeah, lots of people don't. But my hair is porous, so I think it hangs onto product and especially oils a lot. Co-washing alone just wasn't getting it all out. Especially if I didnt co-wash every day, which my life often doesnt allow for.

I decided to re-visit co-washing last week. I had also given up on it because my scalp felt awful.

I bought a few different conditioners to try this time around- all were either a volumizing or a clarifying formula (I had more success with Tresemme Naturals Radiant Volume). One of them was the VO5 vanilla mint that you ordered. I love it. I was able to get six straight days of co-washing (I wash daily due to very intense martial arts training). I probably could have gone longer, but I had used a product with cyclomethicone, plus I was getting my hair colored, so I needed to do a PT. I still use a sulfate shampoo before my PT/DT, not because I feel like I need it for cleansing, but because it makes my hair feel softer than most of the sulfate-free poos I had tried (no co-washing before a PT because I don't want anything interfering with getting as much protein into my hair as possible).

Thanks so much for all of your replies guys....

I'm definitely giving it another shot. And, again my hair is already looking a ton softer... and that is just by doing one co-wash.

I would guess that my hair is non-porous because it takes forever to get wet when standing under the shower....

Last time I was co-washing I did try the ACV and baking soda into my routine, but that too was not helping with the greasiness and build up that I was feeling. But the length of my hair always looked great.

Hope this goes better this time...

Paying attention to which conditioners you co-wash with will make a difference. Sounds to me like you need one that has some form of cleansing agent in it (not all conditioners do, and I think some people do fine with just the massaging action of co-washing, but others really need cleansing agents.)

I co-wash and do periodic BaSo&ACV to clarify and that works for me. I don't know that co-washing would work quite as well for me if I didn't clarify from time to time.

I have to do my hair every day, so I alternate between co-washing, low-pooing, and a weekly sulfate shampoo. I'd love to be able to co-wash every time, but it doesn't work for me. However, it fits well into my weekly rotation.

Like others have mentioned, the lighter conditioners seem to work the best. The ones I have the best results with are Tresseme Radiant Volume, Suave Clarifying, and VO5 Vanilla Mint. If I co-wash with anything more moisturizing, it is a disaster for the day.

So yesterday I had ordered the Vanilla Mint VO5 and then wouldn't you know, I walked into the grocery store right next to my house and there it was, along with the Blackberry Sage....

I cancelled my online order as I had paid 5.95 for Shipping & Handling, and am so excited that I can find them! Now, I need to give them a try. I heard good things about the Blackberry/Sage too.....

Going to be giving the FSG another shot too....
