I would get a jar of refined, virgin coconut oil (supermarket or health food store) and really just saturate the area you're talking about with it. Then starting with your fingers and working from the bottom up, slowly work the tangles and knots out. It'll be an oily mess while you're actually working, but when I use coconut oil to do oil rinses in the shower, my fingers just glide through my hair, plus the coconut oil rinses pretty cleanly with just a co-wash (It does for me anyway). I'd follow that up with a deep conditioning treatment.
DCs and detanglers would help prevent knots in the future. HTH.
