Help! :( Why did HESMU turn out so awfully?

I've been suspecting for awhile that glycerin has been the culprit behind some limpness in my hair, so I decided to try some glycerin-free gel. Aussie Instant Freeze was okay--not amazing, but okay. I tried HESMU having heard great things, and within minutes my hair had fallen stringy, limp and greasy. (I hadn't even used that much, though...and the hold wasn't even that good.)

Now I'm back at square one trying to find my HG. I can't figure out what about the HESMU made my hair react so negatively, nor am I sure what to look for next. I'm kind of limited to Walmart/Target/drugstore products, as I am a college student on a budget.

Any help would be appreciated...after having heard to many great things, I thought it might be HG...

Hi KT. HESMU was awesome, and my go to gel, but it was recently reformulated. Now it has amodimethicone. Double check your bottle.

You might want to try Aussie Instant Freeze. The ingredients are very similar.
3b/High porosity/Fine - Medium density/Medium texture
PT: Ion Reconstructor
DT: GVPCB
Co-wash/RO: Cure Care, Tresemme Naturals, GVPCB
Leave In: Tresemme Naturals, Renpure Moisturizing
Stylers:AIF, Salon Care Super Firm (yellow), Eco Styler (clear), KMFUM, HESMU
HG's: Cure Care condish, Ion Reconstructor
I you need even more hold, buy some AIF, and some BRHG. Yes, it's a little more pricy, but you can mix just a dime size with your AIF and you'll have great hold! The BRHG will last you forever!

Also, are you using a LI? Could it be the culprit? Are you over-conditioned? Is it possible the gel is not the problem?

Oils - MO!, EVOO, jojoba, GSO, SM Elixer, EVCO, VO5 Hairdressing
I don't know what your porosity and texture are, but Jas's overconditioning theory is a reasonable possibility to consider. Limp, droopy curls, and greasy feeling hair can all be signs of overmoisturized hair or even just buildup (greasy feel). You might try clarifying with an ACV rinse or a low poo. If that doesn't help, maybe add in some additional protein.

As far as gel alternatives, I like LALSG, but it's drying when I use it on its own. I like it better layered over another more moisturizing gel. Before the reformulation, I'd had good luck with HESMU pre-plop, and adding some LALSG post-plop. Maybe try your AIF with LALSG, which will add additional hold.

That could have been it...I'd heard you should coat your hair with a LI before drying it, so it stayed moistened...however, I recently ran out of Tresemme Naturals so I bought a quick bottle of that new natural Garnier stuff...what is it called, Pure Clean? Maybe OC'ing could be part of the problem? However, the gel itself also left a residue and flakes :/

Yes, Pure Clean is Garnier's "natural" conditioner. I tried it as a cowash, RO, and LI this winter, and really wanted to like it. Honestly though... I like it best as a moisturizing face wash. This winter it was too much moisture for a cowash conditioner, and not slippy enough to detangle well as a RO. Also, the cornstarch in it flaked horribly on 2nd day hair. I didn't use tons, but if my hair got disturbed, I got a rain of flakes.

That said, I am liking the Pure Clean more now as a cowash conditioner. I just tried it again last week, and used a bit of it only to clean my scalp with, then used Suave Tropical Coconut on the length because it detangles better than Pure Clean. My scalp seemed happier with it than it does with Suave.

With the weather change I have had to change my routine too. I use less LI, more protein, a curl cream and no glycerin. I really like the BSRHG but as said before it is pricey. I don't mind because I use so little with my AIF mixed. Another great alternative I have found is the LA Looks power spikes. Its cheap and works as well as BSRHG for me. I will say that after adding thes hard hold gels I add a little bit of avocado oil or sweet almond oil as I SOTC for softness. I never have flakes and the hold I need. I think if I was still using the heavy LI that I would have flakes. I have also had to start using more products with protein and doing a weekly PT. I always follow the PT up with GVPCB.
