Question What am I doing wrong? (slip problems)

I have very fine, thin, hair. It's a little more porous than average, but not horribly porous. It seems like finding a conditioner with enough slip that I can comb the conditioner through without tangles or snarls would be easy. But so far, everything I've tried just doesn't have enough slip.

My hair is not extra curly, so I don't think my problem is caused by curls. I don't really think it's the fault of the conditioners either. (This morning I tried Giovanni Silk, but I've also tried a host of others from drugstore to higher end.)

So, I must be doing something wrong, but what?

I wash in the shower. I don't pile my hair on top of my head. After washing, I apply conditioner and (try) to stroke it through with my fingers as though I were wearing a low ponytail. (Tangles abound.) After my hair is laden with conditioner and feels "squishy", I comb it through (and find more tangles) with my wide tooth comb from Sally's.

It sounds to me like I'm doing everything right, but my hair disagrees. Can anyone help me out? What am I doing wrong?

Are you possibly due for a trim? I know my hair tangles much worse when I need to get a cut. Also, have you tried a protein treatment? Just trying to throw out a few ideas that seem to work for people.

Hmm...

Well, where are you in protein treatments? Protein sometimes helps with tangles bc it smooths some of the damaged areas. On the other hand, too much protein can make you dry and therefore tangly. :/

What conditioners have you used? I have very tangly hair, and always am on the hunt for good slip!

My HG - GFTN - was just reformulated to add a cone. I go back and forth on the idea of trying it again, though, because it's not a terrible cone.

GVPCB has good slip, and a couple people have talked about Renpure's new Argan conditioner having good slip.

Technique wise, I only ever detangle

Whoops! Child posted that before I was done! Lol!

What I was saying was that I only ever detangle while in the shower with a ton of condish in my hair. I load it in, wait a couple minutes (usually shave my legs!), and then use a wide tooth comb from the ends and working upward. I also find it helps on the more stubborn tangles to let water run down that section of my hair while I work on it.

hth!!

Kinky Curly Knot today has great slip and is really light so it won't weigh your hair down. It's my go-to when I need slip. It isn't very moisturizing, so sometimes I combine it with a more moisturizing conditioner for the best of both worlds.

I agree that KCKT is pretty slippery, even if you use a small amount. Maybe try using a "lot" of it an see if that helps.

Also, the few times I'm done a pre-poo application of unrefined coconut oil my hair detangles in like 2 minutes flat (and I've got loooong, snarly tresses, believe me). I'll put a decent amount of oil in, and since it's so light it comes out really easily in the shower. You could also try EVOO if you don't have CO.

I love Tresemme Naturals conditioner, it is on the lighter side and has great slip. Have you tried this? I use it as a co-wash/ rinse-out and a little as a leave-in most days. Love it.
