I have straight hair and want an afro! - Please help!

Basically, I have wanted afro-curls in my hair for several years now. It’s naturally straight/wavy and there is no natural curl pattern that I can enhance or anything.

I got a perm a few months ago (over 5 months) and it’s grown out quite a lot now and it’s not really that curly anymore. It was loose curls - like Botticelli curls I suppose but I didn’t really like it because it’s not really the type of curl I would like.

Currently, I have been using a method similar to the one in this video (rag curls): How to get big "afro" hair - YouTube
and it works quite well (I end up with a huge ‘ball’ on my head though rather than the ‘lay down’ result on the girl in the video so it’s quite difficult to style) but it takes me around EIGHT HOURS to do this and it’s not practical considering I want a similar affect as an every day style.

I know loads of people are going to say it’s not possible if I have straight hair but I feel so sad when I think that I might not be able to get my hair how I would like

I would like either:
~ Tight ‘coily’ curls like this:

~ Or more like afro style like this:

I’ve read about ‘Asian Afro Perms’ where they put a sort of relaxer on their hair which reverses the effect and makes straight hair curly but I don’t think it’s possible in England and I haven’t seen any products you can buy for this or anything. Also, I’m not Asian so I don’t have that sort of hair so it might not work on me.

Anyway…
I would love to be able to wash my hair and it shrinks up all tight and coily where I can do ‘two strand twists’ in it and stuff like that (doesn’t work in my straight hair)
There must be a way of getting an afro permanently with straight hair - like I said, I’ve already had a perm and that didn’t give me an afro so I doubt that would work unless there’s a specific type of perm that gives you extremely tight curls.

Thanks so much for reading this. All suggestions appreciated.

There is nothing I want more in the world than curly hair.
Straight with waves... Hmm. You sound like a 1C hair type. And it looks like you want 3C to 4A hair.

Well, I'm a strong believer that anything is possible once you set your mind to it. What you can do is buy products that are known to be called "Curl enhancing". They come in shampoos, conditioners, creams/sprays, etc. You can also benefit in trying this blow dryer called the T3 Bespoke Evolution with it's diffuser. Supposedly it made a 3A hair type member here become a 3B with it! Scrunching your hair also curls up your hair, so get into the habit of doing that with gel.

Hope this helps. Remember, also, that you are naturally beautiful no matter what hair type you have, so be proud of your straight tresses whenever you can.

EDIT: Oh, and this is VERY important! Make sure you go and get a haircut that includes lots of layers, like around your face and on the sides/back too. One length hair tends to 'stretch' the hair, making it straighter than a person wants it to be, while layers around the head makes the hair snap up and curl up freely. This advice is especially important for us naturally non-straight people too. These layers also helps boost the sexy body and volume, which is what curly hair is all about, lol!

CG since 3/11/2012

Type 2C (Botticelli according to Curly Girl: The Handbook)

Medium-Coarse Texture
Normal Porosity
Normal Elasticity
HATES: Traditional sulfates/cones.
LOVES: Lots of moisture and homemade FSG!
(Many thanks to

I will also have a look at T3 Bespoke Evolution because blow dryers with diffusers have been praised a lot in terms of enhancing curls. I agree with you that getting lots of layers should encourage the hair to curl up more so I will take this into account

I'll admit to putting my hair in rag rollers and coming out with smaller curls than anticipated and sneaking extra glances in the mirror all day. Never quite 4a/b. I admire that sort of hair and gawk at gorgeous hair whenever I can. But as for perming it into hair - it just seems unlikely to end up looking right. I grew up in the 80s, I've seen a lot of tight perms and they never seem to coil up and spring.

You could probably set your hair in perm rods (use end papers to avoid those weird, straight, angled ends) and it might last several days - until your arms recover from all that rolling. Especially if you slept on a satin pillowcase or pulled it up. But that's more like a "just for fun" thing.

You never know what natural (and less time consuming!) waves might result from styling your natural waves. Have you considered "going CG" as far as being very gentle in how you handle your hair, shampooing less often and with mild shampoos etc.? Curl enhancing products, protein treatments, using a diffuser to "scrunch" your hair towards your scalp, using clips to un-weight the lower layers from the top layers might give you waves you never knew you had!
