Curly Hair in Miami? (recs needed!)

Hi everyone!

About 5-6 months ago, my little sister decided to follow my lead and go natural! She cut off all her (relaxed) hair, basically. Her hair is now a little longer than a TWA, or maybe it's a big TWA. She says it's in an "awkward stage".

She doesn't have a lot of money (student still) or time for her hair, and I've decided for her bday to treat her to a bunch of really nice product. I'm planning to order from culrmart:

the Curly Girl book (she's still figuring out things like properties, cg method)
CJ Repair Me, because I was SO impressed by it myself
CJ Curl Rehab (ATM she doesn't do any deep or protein treatments, I think it could help alot)

I really want to get her leave-in and stylers, but here is where I hesitate. She lives in Miami, so I would guess it's much more humid out there most of the time. She also has hated every gel she's tried - she really likes her hair to feel very soft, so she just uses conditioner to style and ends up with a poof by the end of the day.

So I'm looking for recs for jellies/soft hold styling products, and leave-ins, that are good in humidity/hot weather. I would love to order all together on curlmart because I have a coupon, lol

I also suspect that she's low porosity and protein sensitive, like me. Her strands are fairly thick/coarse, and I would say her curls are 3b/3c ish, hard to tell since it's still so short

Thanks in advance for any replies!!

Congrats to lil sis. That mid length is difficult. I was really tempted to chop my hair then.i live in South and It has taken me years to figure out my hair prefers plain old leave in and oil as stylers. I have never been a big fan of gel except flaxseed or activator gel because I like my hair soft. The li + oil does that for me. I put shea butter only on the ends and finger twirls for added moisture and to reduce frizz but when my hair was shorter wasnt necessary. My li is basically the Kimmaytube recipe only instead of Knot Today I use YTC which is about $7 a bottle mixed with aloe vera juice. Actually before I was using TJ nourish and spa($4) mixed with avj but i dont live near a store and cant get it right now.

Thanks! That's interesting, using oil and li instead of gel for softness. My sis has used jojoba oil in the past, but it left her head poofy by the end of day - I've heard of thekimmaytube LI but never really looked into it. I'll pass on the info to her

Thanks for your response!

If she's protein sensitive, why the REPAIR ME? (Which is great, and I use it, but my hair likes a good solid protein treatment like every two months.

I'm in Miami. I don't care much for gel of the hard hold type and I like touchable hair, so I find I tend to use my curling cream or jelly and leave it at that. Except summer. For summer, I'll use the SS Curling Jelly with some SS FHG. With AG RECOIL I'll use some CJ Curl Queen, and my hair likes it. That's a protein-heavy line-up, though.

For protein-sensitive, maybe she can consider a moisturizing curl cream. Maybe Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Cream (original or lite version depending on her needs and hair type) and some Curls in a Bottle as a serum. Using creams that moisturize help keep hair touchable.

I hate crunchy hard hair. I'd rather have light frizz and some loss of definition than have hard hair. I find if I use a good amount of leave in--I use Beauti-Curls or Rehab--it can act as a styler. A light one. On minimalist days (not deep summer, mind you) I can be fine with leave in and a bit of curling jelly or cream. Done.

But not all gels make hair gross.

I find the most important thing for hair to look decent is moisturization and adequate (but not too much) protein. I carry a small jar of leave-in moisturizer in my purse and, on low humidity days, apply as needed. In summer there's lots of air moisture, so I don't need it for moisture, so I carry smoothing lotion for any defrizz needs. curl junkie works for me. And Re:coil and SS.

If she prefers a minimalist approach, she might be able to use the Rehab for rinse out AND styling/leave-in, and just do that. No more. If her hair is in good protein status, the no-protein Rehab should be fine for her only styling (as you say she doesn't like gels, etc).

A relatively inexpensive good quality coconut oil can serve as a protein preserver (when left in overnight), and can work as a sealant in summer. Don't wanna use TOO much, but it can be part of a a simple, natural hair plan. A little goes a long way and it's budget-friendly.

Could it be too much protein? Do you use smoothing lotion on dry hair? For summer do you think the SS Curling Jelly and SS FHG best? My hair is similar to yours. And do you always use a LI ( Beauticurls)? Thanks for your help.
