Less product, better results?

Like Tree10Likes

Normally I scrunch in quite a bit of gel into my hair, and get pretty OK results most of the time. I feel like I need all the product because my hair is long, and I live in a humid climate. So today I wasn't going out but needed to wash my hair. I didn't want to just let it be so I scrunched in 3 pea sized amounts of gel into it and air dried. My hair actually looked good. Soft, bouncy curls and hardly any frizz except for a spot that I apparently missed with the gel. Anyone else have results like this, or was this just an accident?
My usual technique when trying out a new product is to use the smallest amount I think I can get away with and then move up from there if it is not sufficient. I find that when I do this I get better results with far less product than I would assume I have to use for hair like mine. I am glad the less-is-more thing is working for you too!

I have had times where I know I used too much - but for the most part, I need a lot! I have 3a's in long, highly porous hair! 3 peas is not going to cut it!! Wish it would, tho!!

Like Jas, I've used far too much product on my hair in the past, which has weighed it down, but I've also used too little, making it really frizzy and flyaway. I (think) I've got my proportions right now, and whilst I don't have the shiny frizz free curls I crave, I'm more than happy with what I've got!

i use very little product on a daily basics. I just use my normal condish as a leave in, i mix a bit of oil in my palm and work it through my hair. then i leave it to air dry. somtimes i use a bit of gel but thats it!

my hair: 3c, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

I also blog about my hair journey, please feel free to read and comment/ask questions http://www.naturallycurly.com/blogs/...air-blogs/2494
I've recently subscribed to the less-is-more theory. In my case, I'm not using anything but 8 to 12 drops of baby oil on my 3b M ii hair. It is marvelously shiny, soft, bouncy, and defined.

I think I've been overdoing it for three years. I'm a slow learner. Of course getting my hair to waist length has helped a great deal in calming it down to reasonable proportions too.

No, three peas isn't cutting it for me. Less is less for me.

Hmm I guess the results vary, but just maybe less is more with my hair. I am going to try minimal products again. Thing is, I am wary of doing that if i have somewhere to go. If my hair comes out terrible I'll be too self conscious lol. So next rainy/lazy day I get I'll do it again and report. My curls were much curlier with the lesser amounts of product so fingers crossed
I think it depends on the product. I know I need a good amount of gel for hold, but otherwise, less is more for me so it doesn't weigh down my waves.

I like reminders like this, though. Because if something isn't working any more and I keep adding more, maybe it's time to switch it up and try less

I used to try that nickel amount of leave in when i first started out. Horrible. My hair is entirely too dense. Then i tried the amount used on tightly curly. Way too much. I found my happy medium but I need to coat every strand. I will say I have discovered my hair is happy with just li and oil. I cant remember the last time I used gel and im using curl cream only every now and then so in that case less is more.
My hair would laugh at 3 peas worth of anything. My hair is medium/dense and porous. I need for my leave in to coat every strand or it will he dry as a bone and eventually break off.

I go throgh soooo many bottles of conditioner a year...

Greenandchic, your hair might be laughing, but mine is on a diet. It cannot have more than 2 styling products, that is the limit for my hair. Any more than that, and my hair just goes bad.

Agree, conditioner is not a styler. It is a necessity.
I can't do more than one or 2 products either or my hair gets weighed down. I have also recently discovered that I like using larger amounts of lighter hold products. Sort of less is more, just with hold rather than quantity used....

greenandchic and adthomas both mentioned that they use a lot of conditioner. This is the case for me as well. I use a little less than when I began CG and less creamy stuff, but still a lot of product I couldn't live without conditioner! I don't use a lot of leave-ins though, because I live in high dews year round and I find that this causes ridiculous amounts of frizz. Today I got rained on and my hair held up fine with just LOOB and a few scrunches of gel. Some other days I pile on the stuff and still frizz up like crazy. Go figure
