Do you find diffusing upside down messes up your curls?
I've always diffused part of the time upside down (hanging head down) for volume, but I'm wondering if it causes my hair to be messier, which is a big complaint I have.
Clipping has never worked for me but I may have to choose between volume or curl pattern.
I'm interested in your experiences about this.

I don't find it messes up my waves but I do think I prefer to diffuse a little upside down and the rest right side up, because it does mess up my hair in terms of its part.

Diffusing right side up first, then diffusing upside down a little at the end, to give it a little more volume seems to work for me. I've never actually tried diffusing it upside down first, so it would be interesting to see how different my curls would turn out if I did. (Although I am quite happy with the results I get now. )

Thanks for responding! It's amazing how helpful this forum is for me. I've been on for a few years and I still get insight and tips.
I'm going to try not diffusing at all upside down and if that looks better, the next time I wash it, I'll try diffusing upside down at the very end.
Appreciate the ideas!

Diffusing period messes up my clumps, so I am stuck for 5-8 hours with wet/damp hair. Scrunching my clumps upside down makes my clumps look great, but when I flip my head right-side up, many of them are broken up. I do get more volume and root curl when I do stuff upside down, but smaller clumps and definitely messier looking hair. I usually choose to do things right-side up (scrunch to the side) because it is easier, and i get better clumps, but yes, less volume.

Upside down works for me. My hair is on the thinner/finer side and it helps with volume.

Any type of upside down styling destroys any hope for decent waves.

I'm trying only right side up and liking it so far And all these years I've been doing everything upside down and fretting over my messy hair. It definitely results in lower volume, though.
We'll see what happens as the warm weather sets in!

I've never been able to do anything upside down, I just lose all definition. Diffusing upside down (which I have tried in an attempt at more volume to hide my scalp) gives me hair reminiscent of the 70's when it was brushed! I diffuse right side up but kind of bend sideways and backwards to try and get less flatness.

I get more broken up curls if I diffuse up-side down, but I need the crown volume. I do pretty much everything upside down, but I also don't like the super huge clumps I get if I do it right way up, so for me, yes, it does mess them up to an extent, but I like it that way. :3

Diffusing in any form messes with my curls. They get stringy and don't clump well. I prefer air drying by far.

I diffuse upside down once the gel has hardened a bit. If I do it before then, it's just a mess. So, I sort of diffuse in shifts. First I diffuse upright until the gel cast is hard. Then I'll diffuse upside down for a bit. Then I stop diffusing and let it air dry until I need to leave for work, and then I finish drying it with the diffuser.

I don't diffuse -- gives me frizzy broken up curls instead of smooth clumps.
When my hair is newly cut and I have fresh layers on top, I can do very gentle scrunching upside down and it looks *just okay* when I turn rightside up. In general, I don't get consistent success when I do any hair styling upside down.

I get fluff if I diffuse upside down. But sometimes when I have to choose between going to bed with damp hair or fluffy hair, fluffy wins

For second day hair (I wash at night) I spritz until very damp and then diffuse upside down. I love the results.

My hair likes a lot of the styling upside down, but it's longer.
The daughter who has shorter haircut like yours can't do upside down, though. It messes her hair up. So she does like starmie, basically right side up, but leaning head way to the sides and back to lift the hair from the roots a little. She gets nice volume this way.

I have to say THANK YOU for this thread. I have had some frizz and messy curls lately, especially later in the day, and never thought about it being due to how I diffused! Lately I've been doing lots of upside down stuff for additional volume, but this morning I did my normal routine only I diffused right side up, just leaning to the sides, and on a lower setting till gel cast just barely formed, then I clipped and air dried. My curls are much clumpier, organized, and I still have enough volume for my liking! I am sacrificing a bit of volume for the clumps, but it's a good trade off since my hair looks best clumpy. And they seem to be holding up! THANKS curlies!!

So after reading this thread I decided to give doing my hair upside down another shot. Result: fail. I tried to scrunch in products and diffuse upside down again and while I got nice volume I also got massive root frizz. I'm 14 months in to growing out heat damage so my new growth is way thicker than my damaged hair. As a result I have found that scrunching in products doesn't coat all of my hair so when I diffuse the hair upside down or right side up the result is root frizz. So the next experiment is to go back to applying products in sections then diffusing upside down. This has never worked but I haven't tried it in about 5 months so I'm gonna give it another go this week and see what happens.
