sections of straight hair

I have 3a curls underneath the top layer of my hair. the top layer is somewhat wavy and I can't get it to curl like the hair underneath! also, the hair surrounding my face is really curly at the root, and then it gets wavy, and it's straight at the end. what do I do?! I've even tried getting a perm, but the hair on top was still wavy.
It just takes time. You have to take care of your hair, and going cg is a great way to do that. Learn your hair and what it needs, like moisture, protein, etc. my hair does this also. The top layer is what a lot of people refer to as canopy hair. It goes straight because it is the layer most exposed to the environment. But it can get better, and mine is a little at a time.
2a canopy with 2b underneath.
Fine hair, low elasticity,
Hair dislikes oil
Live in dry climate
The before and after thread shows that canopy curls do improve with care and patience. Mine have improved considerably but then I get some unruly curl that will just not behave, I try to style it by soaking it, and adding gel. Then I wrap it around my finger and scrunch it to try to get it to curl. I've seen also people clip it like a pin curl and let it dry like that. Good luck with your hair
Marci, you are so right. I have some curls that just would not behave. Although thankfully, I have this sort straight sticking hair in underneath layer, so I get to hide it with the top curls. I put in some gel for those straight wavy pieces and twirl around my finger. Other areas of my head needs only conditioner even to style and needs no gel.
3a with some 2a-2c, Medium/Low Porosity
Co-wash:deva no-poo/Vo5 kiwi
Detangle:Suave
Leave-in:Shea Moisture/GVP conditioning Balm/AOHSR

Since long hair- I finger twist in big chunks, which helps till 5th day hair
Gel:LA sports
Plop: Old T-shirt for 15 minutes ,diffuse

My best curls and spirals are at the nape of my neck and nobody gets to see them. My straight pieces are at the sides, usually my right. I have all kinds of curls in there, all over the place. I wish they would just make up their mind haha.
Thanks Marci!! Yes I have bunch of hair that sticks out straight at the nape of my neck in the back, it's got better in recent times because of Cg I guess. Btw I actually love your hair looks soft and shiny!! I think if I don't do finger twirl I might get soft waves like yours

I think our hair behaves similarly because I can get curls too depending on the products I use. If I just let it be, its more wavy than anything else. I like trying all kinds of things, more options are always great
Thats the best thing about curly hair depending on product we can achieve different levels of curls and styles!! Go Curly Revolution

I'm glad you were able to make the new routine work
