What ARE these devil?! (Frizzy/kinky/wiry hairs)
So, I've always had these hairs scattered around my head. But, now that I've begun to really want to take care of my hair, and am learning so many remedies to hair problems I didn't even know I had, I was wondering if anyone knows the causes/remedies of these little DEVILS. What the photos below don't show is really just how small and WIRY these things are. Like an unkempt horse mane/tail hair. They go completely haywire from my hairs natural pattern. Perhaps someone can tell to by the photos what my hair thickness is? I've always assumed coarse, though I'm probably right. These photos were taken not long after I just finished my first baking soda & ACV rinse (after being shampoo free for 3+ weeks now, only using conditioner,) but these random seemingly unhealthy hairs stick around wet or dry...

I get those too. I dont know what they are but mine tend to look like they're not there when my hair dries although you can still tell a little. I've not yet found a remedy for these but when I do, i'll make sure I post it. I try to brush mine down and it works a little.

That's what my gray hairs do.
My remedy is to slick them down with a hard-hold gel, like BRHG.

I get those still once in a while, but they were more common when I first started CG. I am not sure what caused them, but I've gotten better at hiding them in between the nearby curls. I used to want to yank them out of my head before, LOL!

ugh, I have those everywhere! Mostly at the top of my head and patches behind my ears.
My solution: I just pull them out, or trim the wiry strands until I get to the not-so-wiry/kinky parts. Even when these grow long on me they never stay within a larger curl and it looks awful.

Could they be heat damage I noticed I only have them in the places that I went over a lot while straightening

I guess heat damage is possible, I mean at this point anything is possible, right? The only thing with that though is that ever since I've started growing out my hair from 1-inch length since the beginning of this year, Ive only used straightener twice. I have too many to always be plucking them out, I fear especially as I've had a hair-pulling problem before that resulted in a small bald spot (stress.) What I'd really like to know is if anyone who's had these found that they have the ability to become healthy looking hairs again? I mean I've basically only just started the no-poo regime (baking soda & ACV) literally with my first ACV rinse yesterday, and since I have sch short hair i will probably be easy for me to monitor. I'll post onto this thread if I notice a decrease in these hairs in the next few weeks/months/even days?

It could just be that they are a different texture-- more coarse, tighter curl (or looser curl?), or both, so they don't clump with the other hairs that are the same texture. I have this going on too, all of my new greys do this and some that are not grey are coarser than the rest of my hair and stick out. Frizz makes them blend in with the rest of my texture though, lol.
I had hairs like this before I ever colored and I haven't straightened or even blow dried for years (other than at the salon <once/year) so I don't think it has much to do with damage.
ETA: I love how much I learn here, but I definitely start noticing and trying to "fix" things about my hair that I never really noticed or cared about before.

I think it is normal and not damage. A few of us on 4a were talking about how we cant stand the random loose curl and straight strands that dont blend with our mostly tightly curled hair. I used to cut the devils off and some 4as still do because if you wash and go they will hang down longer than the rest of your curls that have more shrinkage. Mine dont clump either unless i finger coil and put it in my twist or braid.

I was thinking those 1 and 2a strands were damaged. I really wish they'd go away. All my gray hair is like this and some of my other hairs. It doesn't blend with my 3b/c hair at all and it's quite annoying!
OAN I used to pluck mine but of course they just grow back. They really ARE the devil.

I don't think they're the devil, they just add character

I get these too. I am a type 4, and I get these random straight strands. So annoying, but only really visible to me.

Yep, I'm also getting these coarse, wiry strands coming through (grey in colour, as opposed to my usual brunette colouring.) In my case, I'm putting it down to my age, (almost 40), although in my head I'm 21 forever, lol!

ME TOO :(
I literally just noticed this I'm only 21 its not gray hairs and its really so frustrating!I wonder is it due to lack of moisture?Or maybe ...idk bc I don't use heat often. I can't stand how random they are all of my hair will be silky then their will be random wiry pieces

I've made some changes to my routine since I last posted in this thread -- clarifying, balancing protein and moisture better -- and my hair is much healthier and more manageable now in general.
I've noticed my grays that used to do this are far less noticeable now that my hair is overall in better condition. So I think there is something to be said for these hairs needing more moisture, protein or both. Or there might be build-up preventing the moisture and protein from doing their work.
