Saying NO to gel forever!

So I'm done with my obsession to have a useful gel . I've tried natural gels, tradtional gels, and homemade gels and no matter how I use them, directly on my hair or over a leave in, they've made my hair worse somehow. My hair, which is pretty happy to clump when you add water or anything emollient to it, actually gets unclumped and more frizzy when I add gel and then the gel sets stiffer and less touch friendly! It's outrageous. I really don't get it.

I was a bit disappointed because while my organic virgin coconut oil was working it wasn't giving me the exact results I wanted and I had to use it over my conditioner for the best effect. Because I've been liking my Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner, I thought I'd try the Curl & Shine Hair Milk despite the mixed reviews. I thought it being more coconut oil based might give my hair more definition, like my organic virgin coconut oil.

I'm glad I did! I don't have to manipulate it as much as the restorative (which will now stay in RO land) since it works better as a leave-in. It's the best frizz reducer, doesn't slow down or speed up the rate my hair dries, and it adds shine and defines my curls with no crunchies.

I hope the silk protein doesn't cause any problems long term. My negative reactions to wheat proteins didn't take very long to surface and never made my hair feel soft like this does, so I'm going think positive. I really enjoy this product. It's all the positives of a leave-in, sealant, and curl cream all in one. I like to keep it simple. My hair and I like a basic routine. I've never had to change it up like some people do thank goodness. I'm a bit lazy .

Yay! I'm glad it worked for you!
Yeah, after KCCC for months, I stopped using gel all together. I use a cream-gel now, which has a runny/creamy texture but provides some hold. I also like curl creams a lot. I'm getting ringlets now without gel!
Congrats!

Yeah I actually looked that product up, after I saw it in you mention it in another thread, but they use fragrance so I had to pass. Sensitive scalp .
Aw
I'm pretty sensitive too, and it doesn't bother me. However, when I repurchased yesterday, the person who sold it to me gave me samples of Koils by Nature Shealoe Conditioner and Herbal Gel. I see they have a fragrance-free line, and I am really becoming a PJ, but I REALLY want to try it! haha

This is something I hope to give up, too! My hair is short though, I rely on wash and gos a lot. Once my hair is long enough to put in a ponytail w/o straightening, or only do 8-12 twists gives me a decent twist out style, then I'm okay with dumping gel forever. I just need about another 3 inches and I am good.

I've been dumping gel lately too. It just grabs my hair, even when soaking wet, and pulls out all the clumps. I've been cutting a dime size of gel with a liquidy styler like BB's FSG or JCRR and scrunching that in. I am getting the same curls without gel, if not better, and apparently I don't need the hold because they're sticking around all day.
fine, thin, normal/(low?) porosity. Mod-CG. Usually I can't co-wash more than 1x a week, & sometimes I have to use T-Gel in rotation due to scalp issues.

Co-wash: VO5 Volumizing
Poo: Giovanni 50:50
RO:TN, Nexxus Youth Renewal, Alba Coconut
LI: KCKT
PT: gelatin PT, ION EC
Stylers: Giovanni mousse, TIGI Curls Rock amplifier (a-cone), Curls Rock Strong Hold Mousse
Gels: SCC spray gel

I've cut out gel too. I sometimes use a LI, but usually I just oil seal.

I like the cleanness about using very little product.

Yay! I'm glad it worked for you!

I use a quarter-sized puddle after my leave-in. I pour it on my hands then scrunch it through my hair (:

I've only ordered a few things from them, but so far I really like them. I find all their stuff is super moisturizing.

It's funny that I found this thread, as I was just thinking today about leaving gel completely out of my routine. I'm a big fan of curl creams and cream gels. Even before going CG I never really liked regular gels (never liked the way it makes my hair feel) and my favorite product was GF curl cream gel - but since this is not CG (contains cones) I've been on the quest to find a replacement. So far, my favorites are the SM Curl & Style Milk and the DB Curling Creme Gel. I also had good success with my first batch of homemade FSG cream, but I've had trouble duplicating those results. Not sure if my hair is disliking the FSG over time, or if it's the other products I've paired it with.

I think it's because the DB SBCMC can (according the the website) also be used as a styler, so that plus the cream-gel give me really good hold but super soft curls The only problem is the SBCMC contains protein, but I'll try it out and see how my hair reacts. If it doesn't work, I want to get the DB Cocoa Bean Smoothing Cream.

I think I used more than necessary, as my hair was a little limp that day, but it could have been the other stuff I used with it (I don't remember now what I used, but it wasn't my other DB stuff).
