Do you bring in your own products??
I am getting my hair highlighted in a couple of weeks. I've been doing the Curly Girl Method for the past couple of months. My question to anyone out there who highlights or colors their hair is this: When you go into a salon to have your hair colored or highlighted, do you tell them that you want to use your own no poo and conditioner (i.e. no silicones, etc.) and you bring them with you or do you let them use whatever products they have on hand and then come home and use a clarifying shampoo for colored hair to get the cones or any other product out? I look forward to hearing from anyone. Thank you!

I call ahead and tell them I would like to bring my own products. Normally, they are open to it. If not it really just depends on if you mind clarifying later.

I rarely go to a salon, but at this point I would. Not because of CG though, it's because I know I'm allergic to everything under the sun.

Im lucky to have an awesome stylist. We really have a relationship together. I was really her first curly and we went through a lot of trials and experiments. She finally knows exactly how and when and where to cut my hair. Ive been telling her about CG and she was as excited as I was. She actually asked me for the site because she wanted to learn also. The next time I went in to her she had products waiting and ready.
I think its wonderful how open minded she is

I go to a "curly cut" hairdresser. I bring my own homemade flaxseed gel. The stylists love it. When I don't bring it they are disappointed. I also bring my own co-wash.

I bring all my own products. My stylist is always curious to learn more about the products I use.....and she shares the info with other curly clients.

I posted a reply to this the other day, but I guess it got lost in cyberspace. My response is: I wonder how stylists here on the boards feel when clients bring their own products. Isn't it kind of like going to a restaurant and bringing your own eggs? I used to bring my own products to my former salon, but I frankly dont want to have to do that again. If I have to bring my own products, then I will leave with wet hair and do my own styling. Just sayin'!

I just let them do their thing with whatever products they want, and not worry too much about it. I'll usually try to co-wash or use gentle cleansing conditioners for at least a week after to not pull the color out of my hair, and eventually I'll do one clarifying wash to get rid of the silicones that were undoubtedly in their products.

I was friendly with my stylist before I went to him. Have gone to him for 30+ years at this point. He's actually the one that got me started when he sprayed Deva Mr. Right on my hair a little over five years ago. Before that, I never used products. He's always interested in what I'm using and would certainly tell me if there was a problem.
I used to let them use the Deva NoPoo (never the conditioner) on my hair, but they changed the ingredients and it took a week for me to get my hair "back." I get my hair highlighted and a wet cut, so have to have it wet and cleansed (my stylist also like to cut "clean" hair.) I bring my own cleansing product and flour sack towels. Always leave wet and unstyled.
The good thing is that we can all make our own choices about what we do.

i don't know how much freedom each stylist has in selecting products for a salon. my guess is not much. so you are not insulting her. even if she is the owner, it's my hair. and if i am going there, i like the cut and they should want to keep me happy to keep me as a client.

Well, I am going for my second Deva cut and color on Friday, and I have specified I dont want to be styled - because the only Deva product I like and use is the volumizing foam, and even then, the Deva stylists use that OVER a gel, and I use it under a gel. So I dont know what she will wash and condition me with, but I am not "letting" her use the No Poo or the DevaCurl Conditioner - both make my hair dull. No shine. I have not tried the Low Poo.

The original formula had the a-cone. When they did an overall ingredient change, many of the folks who liked it stopped using it. The more expensive ingredients went from the top of the list to near the bottom of the ingredients list.

I usually bring my own. I hate the feel of my hair if I don't.

I brought my own styler once when I was stuck going to a salon that I knew did not have any that were CG. I styled my hair myself and left with it wet.
I won't go to a salon again that doesn't carry products I would actually want to use at home. I want the whole package in a salon-- a stylist who knows how to cut, color, and style my hair, and that carries CG/natural product lines. (I live in a large city so I'm able to be picky.)

I envy anyone who's found a stylist who has the complete package:
gives a great cut
is compassionate towards curls
has an open mind / willingness to learn
has a great personality
has reasonable prices
So if they have all of the above but they don't have cg approved products for my hair, I'm going to be pretty forgiving.
On the other hand, I am getting pretty tired of leaving salons with wet or frizzy diffused "their way" hair and coming home and jumping in the shower, starting all over with a clarifier and re-doing everything.
