The bottle of baby oil I have at home currently shows dimethicone as an ingredient. Is that normal?

I tried MO several different ways when my hair was long, and didn't get good results--but then my hair is normal porosity, so maybe that's why. There are a couple of pretty lengthy threads over at LHC on MO (all hair types). Let me see if I can find the link.

OK, here's one of them, just in case anyone is curious. Mineral Oil/Baby Oil? Help?
curlypearl and sheilacurl like this.
3a/b, F, normal porosity

I've gotten my routine down to the bare essentials, finally
Wash: Suave Tropical Coconut
Leave-in: Suave Everlasting Sunshine, detangle with Denman brush
Gel: LAL Sport or Wet Look
Scrunch with flour sack towel, plop 10 minutes, air dry
Refresh with either plain water or Suave/water mix
Still loving the MO...after seeing what it did for my hair, I'm now using it on my face! After all, if it seals in moisture...
I'm using it after washing and patting my face dry. Just a drop to make my hands and fingers shiny, then wiping it on my face. Call me crazy, but I could swear it's making my fine wrinkle lines plumper, and especially around my eyes.
I leave it on 30 mins. or so, before putting on my foundation. Just prior to foundation application, I blot with a tissue to make sure there's no oily residue. It makes my face feel so soft! It seems to be especially effective just out of the shower.
So this morning I tried MO during my WnG.
I'm reading the book "Curly Like Me" so I tried partially her LI method (I.e. apply a handful of creamy LI on each half and comb the tangles away), sealed some baby oil on my most tangle-prone parts and smoothed down my clumps. The whole day I had very clumpy curls, but also some stray flyaways around them (is gel/mousse in this case useful then?)

So I'm not sure yet if MO also had contributed to the clumping.

Update: MO is not effective against matting by friction at very high dews. But I will still try it out during the next wash-n-goes.

Maybe this is the Holy Grail?

I found a product 2 years ago at an outlet supermarket. There was one bottle left, it was called No-Poof. I absolutely had to buy it for the name alone, and it was cheap.

This stuff really delivered. My hair was curly, soft, and poof-less. I could wear my hair loose, shake it at the club, everything. As time went on, and I realized what I had in hand, I started using it more sparingly. I still have that one application left that I am saving for my wedding or something.

It had a whole mess of cones in it, and paraben, and unpronounceable horrors as well as jojoba oil, but I never saw any adverse effects from using it. My hair never dried out to a crisp like it usually does with cones. I never found anothe bottle of this, not even on the internet

Maybe the holy ingredient is mineral oil? That's one listed. I bought some pure mineral oil today and dunked it in my hair. My hair looks good so far, but it's still a little wet. I am praying this is the cure...

I'm definitely a "curly" 2c. Sometimes curly and sometimes just wavy upper layer with a ringlety under layer. My hair has been thick and coarse since birth. Strawberry blonde in color that can and does change depending on the type and amount of light.

All in all, I'm happy with my hair type but almost for sure think yours is prettier.
2nd day, hair still soft, not poofy, but little flyways sticking up. In need of gel desperately.

Well, I'm astonished. I have been dealing with some serious dryness, breakage, and frizziness on my ends since the weather warmed up. I have no idea why that is since we just had the most brutal winter that I can remember in a long time, and my hair was fine. My hair has hated every other oil I have tried. I tried baby oil last year but but in soaking wet hair. It did nothing. I read more about it on LHC last week and many people were saying that it works best for them in damp hair. A few days ago, when my hair disintegrated by mid-afternoon, I wet my palms, put 2 drops of baby oil in my palm, and smoothed it over my hair. I smoothed more water over my hair. When my hair dried it looked great --and stayed that way until I went to bed. No tangles, either. No tangles when I woke up the next morning. That NEVER happens. Yesterday a did a full wet and style and smoothed in one drop of oil on damp hair, concentrating on mid-shaft to ends (next time I'll use two drops). Results? Almost no tangling, almost no frizz even though with yesterday's dewpoint and the intermittent rain I SHOULD have looked like a cotton ball within an hour, and wonder-of wonders, my ends looked thicker. I'm officially a convert!
sheilacurl and NursenNancy like this.
2C/3A, fine, higher porosity.
This is the first time I have seen this thread and became curious. I have normal porosity however, I have coarse characteristics.

The first time I tried the MO I used the 5 drops as recommended without any results.

The second time I used about a dime size amount for each side of my head. I used this between my LI and Styler. I used the scrunch method.

Well, the angels started singing! It is my HG! The MO allows me to mess with my hair a lot longer than I could before without getting frizz. I love big hair but I still want defined curls. So this is very hard to get because one extra scrunch can cause me to be a frizz ball. So the MO lets allows more manipulation without frizz. Also even after my workouts my hair isn't as dry.

I did find that I may not need it every day, I just let my hair tell me if it needs it.

Also, it made my curls appear more curly, which I really didn't need but also not opposed to.

In addition, I used the Mineral Oil that is used for wood cutting boards which I happened to have on hand. I got that from Bed, Bath & Beyond for $6. With a 20% coupon you will have enough MO for a long time. I think this MO is better than the baby oil version because it is thicker. I think this makes the application better.

This is why I love this website, you can get a new idea and it could mean the world of difference.

All I can say is don't knock it until you try it! Your hair-type might like!

I'd been reading this thread with curiosity for some time. I've never been "against" mineral oil in the first place, even on my skin (like many people are) but never really thought about using it in my hair. Well, I ordered some of the "food grade" mineral oil from Amazon and got it today. I put a couple drops into dry hair (as my hair was already dry when I got it) and I think it's going to be something I'm going to like. I don't, however, see much difference between the mineral oil and my beloved Biosilk Silk Therapy. Possibly the mineral oil will "distribute" a bit better which will be an advantage. And it doesn't have silicones (although silicones have never posed any issues for me) so that might be an advantage. Plan on trying it on wet hair tomorrow and we'll see how it goes then.

I tried it too.and it gave me the most shiny curls so far. As far as keeping moisture in I didn't notice anything different.

I did try the Mineral Oil on wet hair and I liked the result. However, I don't see any real advantage over my Biosilk Silk therapy and the Biosilk actually gives my hair a "sparkle", along with the shine. I have strawberry blond hair that has quite a bit of shine to it anyway, so it's possible the "sparkle" is something in my color that the Biosilk brings out but I really like it. The results with Mineral Oil are very similar to the results with Biosilk but the Biosilk has a couple more advantages so I think I will continue using that.

I also really dislike not combing my hair because my hair tends to look messy after a while. Other people's hair looks beautiful all the time but mine gets messy with no combing. So I got a great wide tooth comb I can use and decided to go back to my HG, Biosilk Silk Therapy only (except for my LI treatment Infusium 23 and the Suave Leave in cream that I've been putting in after co washing) My hair is soft, shiny, and "sparkly". Just how I prefer it.

Curlies who want to stay CG only but want similar results to the Biosilk can likely use the Mineral Oil as it does give results that are very much like the Biosilk.

Really wanting to give MO a try but I'm strictly co-washing for now, so no low-poo. I read on one of the posted reviews MO is completely hydrophobic, are any curlies using MO just co-washing and still managing to prevent buildup?
