Fine, Highlighted & Porous

Is there any one else in the same boat? What products and techniques are working well for you? Our dews have only been in the 50's here in Northern MI, but the bigger ones are on their way. I'm dreading even more frizz. I read a ton here and thought I had a good grasp on how to do things, but I'm either too frizzy, too dry, too over conditioned...I don't even know any more

I'm also really struggling with second day hair. I (have to) shower at night and I take all of the proper anti-frizzing precautions, but there's still that bed-head fuzz in the morning to deal with. Spritzing with water and adding more gel just makes it feel gross and crunchy and adding just a leave-in makes it even worse. What can I do so just take the frizz away but keep things soft?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to give advice

I have fine porous color treated hair but live in a dry part of the country. My struggles are different unfortunately. Funny enough lately we've been cloudy overcast and rainy every day with sees in the high 50's low 60's which is insane high here. Usually the dews are crazy low in the 40's.

I was trying to reply to you yesterday, but nc.com wasn't cooperating.
I have fine, highlighted hair. I would recommend protein - I swear by weekly gelatin PTs (using IAgirl's recipe, link below). Protein can help reduce frizz. Protein has made ALL the difference for me in helping hold my 2c curls all day long, keeping frizz at bay, and adding shine. I do the weekly gelatin PTs and I also use some products that contain protein.
PT recipe - as promised

I rotate them around and seem to always get the same result. I just wish someone could tell me what to do or what not to do, lol!

Thanks for your replies, ladies.
I have fine & porous hair. I dont follow my PT's with a DT because I dont feel dry after a PT & dont feel the need to - it just OC's me. What stylers are you using? I prefer to shower at night myself, I never get up in time. I dont bother styling @ night & have given up on 2nd day hair. I go to sleep normally, wake up with totally wonky hair, then just water rinse & style in the morning. Saves time in the AMs. I diffuse for just a few mins then let it air dry on the way to work.

So far it's ok, better actually. I have to stay away from humectants. Oils make my hair feel funny.

My struggle right now is fighting frizz half way through the day. I'm trying to find products to enhance curl that are low in humectants and oil (haha) . Find a protein my hair responds to, and enhance curl in my canopy. I have 2- on top, 2b underneath. Also deal wih thyroid issues so my hair is always dry dry dry.

Again, I would recommend trying IAgirl's PT - the gelatin will give you a really strong hit of protein (more so than most PTs). I would also agree with trying to not do a DT. I can't DT because I get overconditioned way too easily - I think that is true for most fine hair. After a PT, I will just rinse out with some Tresemme Naturals condish - which isn't super moisturizing but adds some slip to help get rid of any tangles. That's all I need for moisture after a strong PT! Hope that helps.

I just tried plopping for the first time a few days ago, Waterlily's video inspired me to give it a whirl, I wasn't having any curls on my canopy beforehand. I was skeptical ~ I've been reading about plopping since July 2009 and finally decided to try it. Why do I do that? Also, it took me 2 years to finally buy a diffuser, lol.

I also HAVE to shower at night! I would rather sleep longer than to get up earlier to shower. I hop in after work which is about 5:30 so I have plenty of time to get dry before I sleep on it. I'm just trying to find a good second day hair routine to refresh and get rid of any bed fuzz

As for stylers, I'm constantly rotating between Biotera Gel, SS FHG, Curl Queen (which is really temperamental, lol), Batia & Aleeza and I just recently picked up L.A. Looks Sport Gel because of Waterlily's videos and the rave reviews about it. My hair feels like straw after using that so that was a waste of $3. Better than $20, right? I have a couple of curl cremes that I tried quite some time ago and wasn't impressed either. I also have some homemade flaxseed gel, but it's starting to smell funky and I always need something on top cause it doesn't look like I put any styler in my hair just by itself.

Thanks for taking your time to read all of this

Thanks for the advice, wavymom, I'm so excited to give that a try! Unfortunately, I'm on an island and I have to wait until Friday until I can go to the main land to pick some of the Knox gelatin up. Darnit, I want to try that protein treatment now, lol!
If you dont feel try after a PT, you def dont "have" to follow it up with a DT. Do you use an LI? My new love is KCKT - few ingredients, & not too heavy for fine hair. Makes it feel like silk.

Havent tried any of your stylers so I dont have much input on them, but in general I dislike strong hold, sticky gels. My curl pattern is pretty strong on its own though. Not strong as in super tight, but strong as in stubborn.

Def report back on the gelatin PT. Love that stuff!

Ok, so tonight a did a 5 min PT in the shower and then used my cheap suave coconut as a rinse out, then used my homemade flaxseed gel with the SSFHG on top. We shall see…

I use a leave-in (Curly Kinks Satin Roots) every so often when the ends feels dry, for example after I use a really strong hold drying gel or during the winter months. Lately, only about 1/2 a pea sized blob on the ends.

I also was under the impression that the more moisture and the stronger the hold of gel, the less frizz I will have. I guess that may be true for some or most?

The strange thing is, when my second day hair is feeling gross, dry/straw-like and producty, as soon as I wet my hair in the shower, that all goes away and it almost feels slimy.

I am in search of some KCKT on the boards right now, it's time to revisit that leave-in again )
So I got pretty caught up in the protein thing and completely forgot about gel. For me, gel is also very important in keeping frizz at bay. I use about a quarter-size of BRHG in my just-past-shoulder-length hair basically every day. I haven't found a gel my hair does better with. It has a really hard hold which helps preserve my curls while they dry, but then I can easily SOTC. May just be something to keep in mind, if you want to try different gels. If I don't use gel, my hair can be pretty poofy and frizzy. But, my curl pattern is 2c, so less tight than yours.

Another thought - have you tried sealing with oil? That can help with frizz.

Just another couple ideas for you, hth. I wash and style in the morning even though drying time is fairly long (a few hours) so I'm not much help with advice on preserving curls overnight.

Have you tried mousse instead of gel? My hair has the same properties as yours and I can't use gel at all, it makes me frizzy(er) and stringy.
No help on the second day hair as I shower in the mornings, my hair is irretrievable after I've slept on it!

I've been reading about that but I'm so afraid of it leaving my hair stringy and weighing it down. I'm willing to try it though, I have some jojoba oil and some sweet almond oil. I just have to take the plunge!

I haven't but that's a good idea! Now I need to research mousses. Do you have any recommendations? TIA!
