Products that don't cause buildup?
I have thick, dry 3A/2C hair and I'm currently growing it out. Since it's curly, I can't really not put any product in it or else it's just a puffy mess. I only shampoo once a week and used to condition daily, but I'm noticing that if I just don't wash my hair at all it looks better as the days go on from those natural oils. However, I just need a little something to put in it to style it but I realize doing that every day without washing will likely cause buildup. What would be your guys advice? Or how can I get some of those natural oils in my hair? Or if I put product will just washing it out with cold water keep the oils in tact?

I wet, use a rinse out and style every day. I seldom use shampoo, usually use natural soap bars or a cleanser (soap bars 5-10 days, cleanser every few weeks.) My hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type companies. If I stay away from most chemicals (like polyquats 4 and 10 found in a lot of gels), I don't find that I get build up.

I agree with the natural products. The products I use are mostly natural and I don't get build up even if I over do it. I do like cleanse my hair though since I work out pretty intensely and I just like to get whatever dust or pollutants in the air off of my scalp. I do use a loo poo though.

by just rinsing products out with cold water, will the natural oils stay in my hair?

There is something called the Curly Girl Method (CG) that is based on not using shampoos because they are too drying. Basically, you avoid ingredients that will build up like non-water soluble silicones or mineral oil. A lot of people here follow the CG method partly or completely. Here are some links to get started, and the newbie section has a lot of helpful stickies that you should go check out:

every time after i shower, i generally just use conditioner and oil as a leave in styler. i use it on the ends of my hair so i dont get build up from it. i use CG friendlly conditioners so i dont have to worry bout that.

How about not wetting your hair completely on a daily basis, but use a refresher spray instead? For me that revives the product that is already in my hair so I don't need to add anymore styling products.
I use a bottle with H2O, 3 drops of lavender eo and a tiny bit of condish when needed.

I also stick with the type of products that Kathymack referred to and I rotate my products daily. I don't have any problem with build up. By rotating, the products I love continue to work well for me.
