So I made my first batch of fsg....now what? Should I be excited? Nervous? Scared? Or a little bit of everything? (just kidding Im really super excited to try it out) should I try it after a nighttime shower or daytime? Should I try it bare? Or with my normal products? Or with just conditioner? Should I leave it as is afterwards or should I plop too? How much gel should I put in? A little? A lot? As you can see, I have a lot of questions! Thanks for trying to at least answer one of them! And please if you can post pictures of your hair before and after you used fsg and how you like it. And also what you put in it besides fsg (additives)
TripGirl,
Using it in the morning, use it at night, use it in between. It's great stuff. It was the only thing that worked consistently for me when I first went CG. Use it as you would a gel. Use whatever you would use under a gel. Use A LOT, you can NOT use too much. I plop after, as with all my gels.
As for additives, use it as it for a while see how you like it, then add ONE ingredient at a time and test your hair. If you add two ingredients and your hair freaks out, you will not know which ingredient is the devil.
3A, Protein Senitive, Low Porosity,
Med-Course
Wash: Suave Naturals Conds (excluding Coconut), CVSB
Rinse out/Leave In: GVP Cond. Balm, KCKT,
Style: Naturelle Gel(winter HG), KCCC (summer HG), Flaxseed gel
SOTC: JCNS
Love your hair: Love yourself!
Yes, use a LOT of it! FSG is amazing in that you really cant over do it. I like to use it on wet hair with a gel on top.
- 2C - Coarse Canopy & med/fine underlayers
- MOP C Hydrating 'poo
- LOreal Natures Therapy Moisturizing condish, ION Effective Care, Garnier S&S (old formula)
- treatments: CJ Curl Rehab, CJ Repair Me!
- plopping, diffusing, and clipping the roots
Like LuckyCharm, I use ALOT (you really can't use too much) and I use a hard hold gel over it. In fact, today I was being lazy, and also trying to conserve my favorite hard hold gel, so I used a medium/light hold gel over it, and my hair is awfully frizzy. I'm glad I didn't have to go anywhere today!

As for additives, if you aren't familiar with them, its def. a good idea to put them in one at a time and see what works. But what I did was put in what I knew my hair liked from other stylers I had used and knew worked for me.
A good list of additives to start with (not to add all at once, just a list of additives that most of us will put in our FSG) is:
Aloe - I think for cutting down on frizz, and I believe its a humectant? someone can correct me on this
Honey or agave - humectant
glycerin - to cut down on frizz
magnesium sulfate - for curl enhancement
oil - for moisturizing. You can use just about any oil: olive oil, grapeseed oil, shea, etc. You have to figure out what works for you, and of course some oils are heavier than others
protein
Xanthum gum - thickens the gel up
essential oils (for scent) - any that you like the smell of. Lavender is good, some people like vanilla, etc.

Hope that helps, and there's a very good thread on making FSG that has more information on additives. You have to search for it. I think Botticelli Babe started the thread. Just put "flax seed gel" in the search engine and it should come up. It's a long thread.

I put mag sulfate, honey, oil (whichever I feel my hair wants, but I've used a few different ones), glycerin (my hair doesn't mind it, but some people are very anti-glycerin ) and aloe in my FSG to name a few additives. My hair loves, loves, loves FSG. I've been CG for about 6 years, and FSG has been my sole styler (except the gel I put over it) for about 8 months. I will try other things once in a while, but that's just the product junkie in me making sure there isn't a Holy Grail product out there I'm missing out on
So far, there isn't!
glad you are making FSG. Its the best.
That's me with FSG as my styler!!

Thanks! I think I'll add some mag salt so I get some more curl. Are there any other curl enhancers out there to add? Also I might try a 75/25 with 25% lalsg in my hair for a bit more hold and sunscreen during the summers. Thanks for all of your advice!
Ditto on everything that's already been said. My favorite additives are honey, glycerin and protein. If I need extra frizz control, I'll use LOOB under the FGS. If I need extra hold, I'll use LALSG over the FSG. Most of the time, I don't need anything else. There is at least one poster who mixes LALSG to her FSG. I tried that once and found I like it better if I layer the two instead of mixing them.

I have also found that the additives work best if whisked in after the gel has cooled some. The exception to that may be the mag salt. If I use that, I add it at the beginning.

I rake through a liberal amount of FSG to wet hair before I plop, then scrunch in a little more after I take off the plop. If I don't plop, I'll start with the same liberal amount, diffuse till about 50% dry, scrunch in a little more FSG then air dry. Lovin' it!
3B, fine, normal to low porosity
Modified CG since June 2010
HGs: FSG, anything with glycerin, Tresemme Naturals conditioner, Curls Like Us cloths, satin pillowcases.
What are some good additives that are protein free?i figured out that my hair doesn't like protein or aloe (my condish has aloe and protein in it and it's brand new )
My philosophy with trying new products: First try the product by itself, so you know how your hair reacts.

I think most people put FSG on at least damp hair, but if you're curious how your dry hair reacts to it, then try it on dry hair. Once you know how your hair reacts to FSG, you can start deciding if you need to mix some more products in, or if you want to layer things on top of it.

I would never put FSG on dry hair. I mean, I tried it once on dry 2nd day hair and it did absolutely nothing for me. I use it as a styler, so for me, it goes into absolutely soaking wet hair, upside down, from ends up into the crown, then into the back, then into the crown, until my hair is saturated. That's how I apply all my stylers, and that's the technique (learned on here from other curlies) that works best for me.
Then I apply my hard hold gel over it, same application (but not as much, of course) and then I plop.

I'm sure putting FSG on dry hair works for some people - some people put their stylers on damp or dry hair, different application methods work for everyone. But applying styler to soaking hair works best for me. I get maximum clumps and curls, and minimum frizz that way, and for me that's the best way to not disturb my natural curl pattern.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the only additives that contain protein, is well, protein.
Everything else (at least in the list I posted) is not protein.
To add protein to my FSG I use a powdered vegetable protein I get at the health food store. Some people use clear gelatin.

On thanks! I thought that none of the ingredients had protein but I thought that I should ask just in case. And I might use my gel dry when I put my hair back into a ponytail l as a "smoother downer" to make sure that my flyaways are at bay.
FSG isn't the same as regular gels, in that its not a gel in a conventional sense. You wouldn't use it to slick back stray hairs or smooth down flyaways, because it doesn't contain the ingredients normal gel does.

For that, we put "regular" gel. I use a hard hold gel over it because I need more hold, and you'll see most of us on here use a gel - of varying degrees of hold, over most of our stylers. Some popular hard hold gels include LALSG (LA Looks Sports Hold Gel), and BRHG (which is Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee), some popular medium hold gels include EcoStyler, Sally's Bioterra, and there are a bunch of light hold gels I don't even know about because I haven't tried them.
Some people say EcoStyler is not a gel, but I get good hold from it so that's what I call it.
I use Aussie Instant Freeze with the best results (it's medium-hard hold), but I have LALSG and EcoStyler too, as well as a couple of others that I don't care for from the dollar store that are just languishing in my product junkie cupboard Anyway, those are what I use to smooth flyaways, but FSG is not like that.

FSG, even though "gel" is in the title, is a styler, a curl enhancer. More like a gelee than a gel. In fact, I'd call it a gelee. It does the work of a curl enhancer, whereas a gel can be a curl enhancer but for me is a setting product.

Also, it doesn't hurt to use a Leave In underneath the FSG to keep your hair moisturized, esp. if you didn't add an oil to your FSG.
HTH!

I dont think of FSG the same as regular gel either. I hate traditional gels because I dont need a lot of hold bc my curls are tight. I like my hair to be touchably soft and fsg gives me the gel look but not the crunch. I use it over li. I like activator gels too. Very moisturizing.
Thanks for the tips! What gels would you recommend to try putting in with my fsg that are strong hold? And also, what are good curl enhancers to put in my fsg besides mag salt?
Trip, hon, I listed a bunch of gels in my earlier post Aussie Instant Freeze is the one I like best, but I also use LALSG, EcoStyler, I've used BSRHG, and others.

BTW, I don't put other gels in "with" my FSG, I layer gel over my FSG. A small, but important distinction. So I'm not recommending putting gel in with FSG at all. Just wanted to make that clear

I don't really know any other curl enhancers besides mag sulfate. I like mag sulfate as a curl enhancer. I put honey in my FSG, which is a humectant, but I think it does a bit of curl enhancement too. I think the flax is itself a curl enhancer, maybe? Or perhaps it's more known for promoting clumps.
Anyway, magnesium sulfate is a great (IMO) curl enhancer but it can be drying so make sure you balance that if you add it to your gel. I never have a problem with it drying me out, and I'm pretty dry, but I counterbalance the drying properties with oil and marshmallow root.

Land sorry auntie I just got confused that happens... A lot...
No worries

I forgot one gel I have that some people like, but I have had mixed results from. It's Hugo's Naturals Gel. I'd call it a medium hold gel. But other people call it a hard hold gel. It's got good hold but I just don't like it. It has alot of protein in it.
It's a good curl enhancer though, so maybe the reason I don't like it is that I don't need a strong curl enhancer is that I already have one in my FSG, and I just need hold from my gel. The Hugo gel is also more expensive: $5 or $6 for 4oz.
My Aussie Gel is like $3 for the same amount and I get alot more use out it

Be sure to let us know how it goes with your FSG

Actually my fsg worked out for the first time actually trying it! I was a little worried at first that my hair would feel gross because I scrunched in a TON of it! But, no worries, today my hair feels awesome! I took a shower last night and left in a little bit of my suave naturals in my hair (I usually wash it all out and then add more as a leave in but this time I felt that my hair did not need it) and then I sectioned my hair (which I never do) and scrunched and raked in the gel, then, I flipped my hair over, added more gel, scrunched it in, and did the same thing for the sides and back of my hair. I have to say though that I might want to try the BRHG wih it or the Aussie instant and see what I get with that. Also I am going to add conditioner and mad salt to my fsg and see if that works. I will probably make another batch today and see what I come up with. I'll post pictures later when it stops raining and I have better light...
