oils being occlusive
Ok I use oils for both my face and my scalp and hair. Natural plant oils, not mineral oil. Now I've read and heard that oils are occlusive and they dont allow your skin /pores to breathe. So this confuses the heck out of me. Here I am putting in castor oil to my scalp to help with hair shed and support hair growth and now they're saying that is actually not letting my pores breathe, thus will lead or can lead to hair loss. What is up with this? Are there any scientists here that know about this more?? Because I use vapour beauty makeup that has sunflower oil, castor oil and beeswax, and people are saying that actually prohibits toxins from being moved out of my skin. YIkes. Hope some light can be shed on this topic that affects so many of us as many of us leave oil on our scalps and face.

I use mineral oil, straight up. Nothing better in my opinion.

That's very true. I guess you gotta look at the source as well. This was one site I found and who knows it if sells products or what.
DOES NATURAL IN SKIN CARE NATURALLY MEAN GOOD?

I use Rosehip seed oil on my face and it's the best thing that's ever happened to it. It's in a lot of even unnatural skin care items.

I guess we'd have to hear from 70 year old ladies who have used oil on their face on their life to see long-term effects

Well my mom's not 70, but she'll be 59 this month and she's used oil on her skin and hair her entire life and she has great skin. Doesn't wear mu either.

Thanks for sharing that for real. Because my skin has improved with oil but like I said, I got freaked out thinking I was building toxins up in my liver because my skin couldn't breathe. I just found this study and that builds my confidence up a bit. Saying that oils do hold moisture in but they still allow skin to breathe.

my skin and hair LOVES oil. i use argan oil in the morning and evening primrose in the evening ( on my face that is), the evening primrose oil helps with under eye circles. for my hair i use somthing a lil heaving, mac nut oil and apricot oil and coconut oil. i get fantastic growth and shin and it helps repair.
the argan oil has also helped clear up my acne and helps with making scars disappear..... so yea i do agree that it depends on the person.

and for you that put oil on your face in the morning, do you use any other moisturizer beforehand or no?? also, do you have to wait a bit before applying makeup?? I'm upset that my skin isn't liking my oils in the makeup. Also, for those of you who use it, are you planning on using it long-term or just to clear up a situation???

i dont use any other moisturiser, i just wash my face and put it on. if im wearing make up then i only put little on, n i wait till its all gone. but when i put make up on, i do not put it on my eyes, i go under, and dont go past my eye brows.
i use it long term. ive been using it on my face for a year, the argan that is, the other ive been using for 6 months or so. ive even got mum hooked on the stuff! lol
ive heard as well about black caster oil and coconut oil on the face, but ive also heard that it makes people break out badly, which is clogging the pores so its really about see what works best for you. :

I use virgin coconut oil on my entire body, including my face, daily.
I do wait 15 min or so before applying make up, and blot any excess oil off with a tissue. My make up goes on great, and my skin is SO happy.
Tonight I mixed up a quick hair treatment with just VOO and honey, warmed up and slathered on. I did it in the bath to eliminate mess and soaked in the tub (a bunch of the mixture spilled into the bath water while I was applying it) for 30 min while my hair was in a shower cap doin' it's thing.
My skin feels SO silky and soft now, as well as my hair!
My skin is definitely breathing, and not building up toxins. Massive breakouts would be the first indication that toxins were building up.

That's why I love you guys so much. Yo'ure so smart, very true that if you had toxins getting trapped, you'd have acne. I've had some acne in my scalp but it was before I started using oil, so I don't think it's due to that. On my face, using oil, I've just had some like raised/red pores, that don't turn into pimples, but they do seem irritated. Maybe it's just finding my oil that's right for me. And like you said, if it were toxins, it would be a massive breakout and not just a few here and there. Thanks so much. Good point

Well the oil in mu is something you can't control. You don't get to choose the oil. It's often mineral oil, which causes a bad reaction for some, or just oil your skin doesn't prefer. Also, for some it's the combination of the ingredients used in mu and not simply the oil alone.
I have dry skin so I don't generally have to wait for oil to soak in. If you have oily skin you might only want to use it at night. You just have to find what works for you. Jojoba is a really light oil and it's supposed to mimic your skins natural oils.

I just started using jojoba oil on my face. It's supposed to be the closest oil to the oil your body produces. In a review of jojoba oil a girl that's been using it for 5 years said what your akin will go through a transition phase where you might break out the first 2 weeks. Now reading all these

Please don't be scared. Oils have been used for centuries on the skin. Our skin produces oils for the express purpose of moisturizing, nourishing and protecting our skin. This whole idea of random evil toxins being trapped is bogus, and has no scientific basis.

I agree with this. I had been doing some research on something called "shielding lotion" and I think the same concepts apply to oils. Yes, they create a barrier on our hair or skin, but that's the purpose - to moisturize, nourish, and protect them from the things in the environment that cause damage. If we leave them on indefinitely and never washed our hair or face, then yes, they can build up and cause issues. However, we all know that we need to wash our skin/hair and remove any of the yuck that has built up. Any "toxins" (and I would say "dirt" is more appropriate) get cleansed away, and the oils help keep that stuff from penetrating our skin and hair. People may have sensitivities to different oils, so you have to find what works best for you, but as long as you are following a good routine of gentle cleansing and moisturizing, I wouldn't worry about using oils. Just my 2 cents

Yes I agree. It's just what scared me was that word occlusive. Which means blocks, but I do think oils get mostly absorbed, not like silicones and mineral oil which literally do just sit. I think I will find a happy -medium in my own skin care, perhaps sleep some nights with no moisturizer or oil on to let it breathe, but I tried last night and my skin looks more dried out, so who knows. AS far as hair, right now I'm oiling every night because of this dry scalp, so also it has to do with your condition. BUt I do deep cleansing with oil on the face, I look so darn good after that. BUt like I said, I do believe the skin needs to be free at times. So i think I don't always want makeup on all day and then oil on all night, that I"m not so sure I want to do. But like someone said above, if you had toxins, before they would go to the liver and such, you would see break outs from those toxins building up under teh skin, so if you don't see that, you can assume nothing is being trapped. Taht was a good point. Didn't mean to scare, but I was scared and hearing from you all calmed me down.

exactly, its about finding an oil that works for you and that you really love. i love the argan and evening primrose for my face, i personally would not use coconut oil or olive for my face, although i love using coconut for my hair. so long as you cleanse well you shouldnt have any dirt being trapped

As far as using oil on your face...I have a couple questions.
My routine is burts bees exfoliating scrub and toner. I follow that up by the yes to tomatoes salicylic acid stick on blemishes and finish with the yes to tomatoes moisturizer. Ive been adding jojoba oil to my routine but Im not sure where to put it. Ive been putting it after the scrub and toner and sometimes putting the moisturizer on after. Is there a science to it?
