Curly friendly hair accessories?
Can I get some help here? I don't use hair accessories very often, but wearing my hair curly all the time will start to drive me nuts if I can't mix things up lol.
CG handbook says not to use elastic hair ties with the metal clips on them. Does that mean the ouchless ones with no metal are okay?
What about those thin elastic headbands with beads? I saw one at Maurices and I love it, but I just know the beads would mess with my hair.
Thick fabric headbands? The Goody clips with 'teeth'? Bobby pins? I also have half-moon shaped clips that you kind of snap into place, but the clasp is made of metal & my hair gets stuck in it.
Also, what's a good rule of thumb for using hair accessories?

Well, I would say that anything your hair gets "stuck" in is probably not a good idea, just because you want to avoid breakage. Otherwise, it just depends on whether or not you care if the accessory messes up your curls. I found some cute mini combs that I sometimes use to pull small sections of hair away from my face. Or, if you like putting your hair in a bun, goody makes something called a spin pin so you don't have to use a hair band or a bunch of bobby pins.
Mini combs:
Spin pins:

I no longer use regular ponytail holders, even ouch less...I've been using these ponytail hooks and LOVE them! They took a little getting used to, but once I got the hang of them I don't use anything else. I don't lose hair when taking them out and my hair is tailbone length.
I use Hairsticks/chopsticks and hair forks mostly. There are a bunch of sellers on etsy.com. Prices vary from reasonably cheap to very expensive. It all depends on your taste. I love spin pins as well. I also have several flexi-8 barrettes. I love the mini size for pulling back small bits of hair out of my face. I usually inspect a hair accessory pretty thoroughly before purchasing if possible.
As for me, if I hear hairs snap when the accessory is going in or when I'm taking it out of my hair, it's either gone or I fix it with nail polish or file it. Hope you find something that works!

I don't use elastics or anything like that - they pull my hair out.
Things I use:
Banana clip
Hair(chop)sticks
Beak clips
Jaw clips
French comb

oh god, not banana clips! those suckers are hard to get out of your hair, especially if your hair is thick.
I love spin pins, they hold anyone's hair. Decorative clips are always nice and those ones where it's a large, flatish broach looking thing that you put a stick through to hold back half of your hair. Sorry, I can't remember what they're called

Gotta disagree with the spin pin thing, they wouldnt hold my hair if I paid them. Maybe its because my hair is fine & thin, maybe there's not enough hair for it to "grab" onto. Maybe they work better for med-dense hair. I thought they were a waste of $4. Glad they work for you tho lol!
Most of the time I pin back whatever I want pinned with bobby pins. I have some bobby pins with flowers on them too for a touch of color

I like Flexi-8 clips, and Ficcares, although Ficcares are expensive. They both work well for my thin, fine hair. My favorite for ponytails are elastic silicone bands that I get from Sephora. Good Hair Days pins available at Sally's are great for updos, but they can have seams that need filing or sanding, IME. They are inexpensive and do a great job though.

It's the banana clips that tend to catch (and snap) my hair, which sucks because I love the look of them.
I will have to try out some of the suggestions you guys gave me. How do you use hair chopsticks? My hair is very dense and the bottom layers are thick & coarse so lots of things don't have a chance of keeping my hair UP for more than 20 minutes.
