Default Layering, yea or nay?

Ok, so I'm going for a cut wednesday morning, and I thought I knew what I wanted-- my hair relayered, and cut an inch or so below my shoulders. But... I went on Ouidads website, and she said run if they tell you to layer your hair, or get it thinned. I know thinning is a no. But layering?? And what is her cut and slice technique, exactly? Can someone please explain that to me? All the models' and people's hair in her YouTube videos are gorgeous! Is this because of cut and slice, her products, or *sigh* photoshop? Help. Please! TIA

Layers can be absolutely fabulous for wavy/curly hair.

The stuff about avoiding layers versus "carve & slice" sounds like nonsense intended to make ouidad's brand seem superior. I had my first ouidad cut recently - and if you asked me to define the difference between layering and "carve & slice" I couldn't but I'm pretty sure I got layers whatever they call it - I'm really happy with it. Layers are the best way to go for a lot of people to enhance curls and provide overall shape - to avoid the dreaded triangle for example. I do agree that thinning should be avoided - I think it contributes to frizz. In any case, the success of a haircut always depends more on the skill of the stylist than on the method anyway IMO.
Good luck!

+1 to curl enhancement! I'm going to take some length off for that as well as my layers. I have my fingers crossed! I'm glad you think your ouidad cut was like layering, I wasnt sure if it was just marketing or if she actually had some curly miracle. But I'd be willing to spend some on that, for sure. Eventually. For now I'll just have to hope my stylist is skilled!! Or umm, at least does better than last time... Lol, I'll have to try and explain better! Thanks to both of you!

Layering can be very good and even thinning if done CORRECTLY. The taboo on thinning hair is all because some stylists overdo it and that leads to shorter hair pushing up on the outer layers, which makes hair look thicker and poofier.

But really, if anyone here has thick hair then getting it thinned out slightly can make a world of difference.

Just wanted to add that THINNING curly or wavy hair (with thinning shears) is usually not recommended. IAGirl describes the effect of thinning shears well when she says its like playing that childhood game 'crack the whip'. The individual shorter hairs have no idea where to go or how to clump, and it creates frizz frizz frizz. I unwillingly got thinned (and razored, ugh) last year and I'm still growing that mess out, and still seeing the effects from that cut.
Layering, not the same as thinning, can be excellent for our hair types. The layering to ask for is 'long layers held at a 45 (not 90) degree angle'.

I don't think I'll take a chance on thinning, but I don't really need it anyway. What's the difference between long and short layers? And if I don't mention the 90 and 45 degree Angle thing, what would he stylist do? Last time I just said layers, and she gave me one huge layer on top, and then the bottom, with very little in between. It looked terrible, and took me forever to grow out.

I love my layers! But they have to be done right - sounds like the last time for you they were not!

If you don't understand the angles thing, insist you stylist talk you through his or her plan, explain what angles they are going to use and why. Ask a lot of questions during that process. Tell them you a) ha a bad experience in the past, and b) would like to understand the process better so you know what to ask for, etc.

Long layers are the easiest to grow out if you don't like them, so maybe start there if you are really unsure!

I'm not sure yet... But I think it turned out well!! I can't wait to wash and use my products, so it's not as big and frizzy.
