After plopping for 20-30 minutes, I usually diffuse for 5-10 minutes, then airdry the rest of the way. I've found that even those few minutes of diffusing gives me more curl definition and slightly more volume (not much, but I'll take what I can get). With or without those few minutes of diffusing, my hair takes forever to dry, so I've just gotten used to being out with wet hair. Luckily, I live in the NW, where it rarely hits below freezing. I've already started to wonder what in the world I'll do when I get a job (post PhD) and have to (very likely) move somewhere where it gets much, much colder.

i air dry. i find that for me plopping and defusing actually takes away some curl took me awhile to figure that out. so now i just deal with however many hours it takes for my hair to air dry even if i look similar to a wet troll the first 2 hours

Air dry because I hate blowdryers and don't mind my hair being damp.

I'm in the process of trying to figure this out, too. If I just air dry, my hair just lays too close to my head and I don't get the volume I like. So far, diffusing for about 5 minutes right away gives me the best curl, but then it's still not dry enough to scrunch out the crunch by the time I get to work. I have one of those "killjoy" jobs where I can't go in looking like a drowned rat. So, I'm experimenting with diffusing a little longer.

I always air dry, but this method does not leave me with a lot of volume. I wash/condition my hair at night, and by the time I wake up in the morning it is 90% dry. My hair looks terrible when I attempt to diffuse it dry, but maybe I could try plopping for a few minutes and then diffusing. Worth a shot.
