Default I cut my own hair!

I have been growing my hair out for over 10 months. Lately, it seemed like my 3b hair was looking more 3a-ish and flat on top. The weight of the curls was weighing them down. Time for a haircut! But I didn't want to go in and have someone chop off the length that I have been growing for so long and I've never had a haircut I really liked. So I decided to try the ponytail method of layering your own hair. It worked! I didn't lose any length, but the curls are springier again. And it was really easy! Yay!!

Pic 1 - Before 10 months of growth
pic 2 - 10 months later, weighed down and stretched
pic 3 - After ponytail cut

Wow! that cut looks REALLY nice! Good job!

Is the ponytail method that thing where you gather your hair on top of your head (in a ponytail I guess) and cut straight across? I know someone who did that and to my surprise it looked pretty good. Did you do something different?

Thank you!

Yes, that's what I did. I gathered all my hair (very wet and conditioned) at the top/crown of the head. I put a ponytail in tightly and pulled the hair straight up. I just snipped about 2 inches. It was enough to layer without cutting any length because the side and back pieces didn't even reach where I was cutting.

What the back look like? Does your hair fall in a U shape or more like a V?

The bottom of the back, if that's what you mean, is kind of u-shaped. But I can't say it's from this cut, because only the top layers were cut. The sides and bottom didn't reach the spot I chose to snip. I just wanted to lighten it up without taking any length. I don't know how it would be shaped if I cut further up(or is it down?) the ponytail.

Wow... that looks amazing!

How do you get the top/front of your hair to sit like that?

Thank you everyone!

princesspie - I apply conditioner and gel, scrunch upside down, then I flip hair over and back. After that I put in duckbill clips to lift roots (3 down each side, and 1 in front). I use spray gel to hit just the part I've clipped. I leave them in while I air dry or diffuse, depending on how much time I have, and take them out when hair is almost dry. When fully dry, I SOTC, sometimes upside down for more volume.
