Thought I needed protein, but have a new theory. Help!

I'm having a hard time getting this right. My hair looked better when I first went curly!

Right now I have an oily scalp and straw-like hair that won't curl and I'm not sure how to fix it! I posted hair symptoms and declared that I thought I needed protein, so many of you came to my rescue with great protein advice (thanks!). In spite of the fact that all my products have protein in them, I went ahead and did AIGirl's PT treatment (hey, my scalp is greasy and the CJ stylers seemed too moisturizing, so I thought I was over-conditioned, right?)! And now my hair won't curl and feels like straw! I did a short (really just a few minutes because I was super scared of OC) DT (CJ CR) which seemed to help a very little bit, but my hair is awful! No root curl or any curl on ends, and I usually wake up each morning with a head full of loopy, shiny curls! Also, my hair seemed dry as soon as I got out of the shower, particularly at the roots.

Thinking back, I think all of this started when I changed to a shampoo that I now see has soy protein in it. If protein builds up on hair, is it possible that it would make products sit on top of the hair and make it SEEM greasy, when in fact it is still dry? Does this even make sense? And if so, what should I do now? Another, longer DT?

Please help.

I would throw a lot of moisture at your hair and avoid any protein at least in the near-term. It sounds like you should scan all of your products and not use any that contain protein until your hair is back to itself.

As for the greasy scalp, you might want to try the method (I forget what the acronym is) where you apply conditioner to the bulk of your hair except at your roots, then apply a low-poo to your roots and scrub your scalp, then rinse that all out and apply conditioner to the length of your hair. Also - how long have you been doing CG method? It may just take awhile for your scalp to slow down its production of oil now that you've stopped using sulfate shampoos (this can take several weeks, and even a couple of months for some).

Thanks, wavymom! I started CG the last week of June. I didn't have the greasy scalp until I started switching up products, which is why I was wondering if the protein was causing it. Lately, my products seem to sit on top of my hair. My hair feels greasy AND straw like at the same time. So odd! And I normally have a fair amount of root curl naturally, given my overall loose curl pattern, and it's now pretty straight and flat.

I guess I'm gonna give a gret big DT a try, followed by your low poo/conditioner method advice.

Thanks!

It could be that your hair just doesn't like soy protein. But since you have issues that sound to me like over protein usage, I would drop all protein and increase moisture for a while. Then start again with your protein containing products and keep a close eye on your hair's reaction. But probably keep soy and soy proteins out of the equation.

Experimenting with too many products to name here. All this great info keeps my head spinning.
Thanks, raindear! So good to hear from you! I hope it's just the soy protein - I'll feel so lucky to have discovered something more about my hair!

Bookworm, straw-like, straight hair sounds like overproteining. As others have said, cut out protein and hit your hair with moisture until it's back to normal. Then you can try reintroducing protein again as your hair needs it. This blog entry by Redcelticcurly has some good pictures to illustrate OC'd, OP'd, and balanced hair (I like good visuals), as well as a good explanation about what to do when.

Thanks for the link, Geek_Chic! The visuals help me more, too. I did an hour and a half long DT with CJCR this afternoon and my hair looks and feels MUCH better! Not back completely, but enough so that I'm convinced my problem was too much protein.

Whew, balancing protein and moisture is HARD! Thanks again!

point is, you will get into a place where you can see when your hair would need protein. and that will make it easier to keep the balance.

I'm 8 months in and tend to fight a bit with overconditioning still. I need enough protein to keep my finer strands happy, but not so much my low porosity-ness freaks out over it.
