Saga of the salon, part 2

I went to get my roots touched up today. I brought my own stuff, my shampoo and conditioner, and most important, my roller Jaw clips. I asked the stylist how she felt about using my stuff, and she said she was fine with it so we proceeded. After my color, she shampooed and conditioned, and she cllipped; but then asked me to show her how I used them and I was happy to oblige. I left the salon looking more or less how I look when I leave my house, so I was happy about that.

What I was not happy about - and I need help with this - was that I had budget an amount of $$ based on my previous root touch by another stylist, who is now on maternity leave. So I was unpleasantly surprised to find that I was charged $92. for a root touch and a styling. I questioned politely, the stylist came back out and affirmed a root touch and styling, which was twice what the other stylist had charged me, and no, today's stylist is NOT more experienced, she is less experienced, than the previous stylist. I dont want to have a problem with this salon - but I AM a gal on a budget. I know next time I will specify "color only", no styling - I will go home with wet hair. But I feel bad about the whole thing. I know stylists are paid for their time, but heck, I kinda feel I styled my own hair!

Please comment honestly.
Wow, Myrna, you are not having great luck with this salon

Did you ask them why there was a price difference for the exact same service? I can't understand why the price would be higher, for a less experienced stylist, when the last one also did a styling too.

I would call and ask (if you haven't asked already). Or, if you asked and aren't happy about the answer, I would talk to the owner and explain that you aren't happy about the pricing and not being told in advance that you were going to be charged differently from what you paid previously for the exact same service.

Talk about sticker shock!

that is too bad. some salons do have stylists that are more, but they are generally the more senior ones.
i would ask how much she charges for color only, then i would style it myself. in all the salons i've been in they will let you style it yourself if you want, they will even provide a dryer/diffuser.

rbb, and Auntie, yes I agree with both of you. From now on, I am making my appts late in the day, so I can just get color and then go home. I will specify "color only", and when it is time for my next cut, it will be cut and color only, I dont need to get styled there. If necessary, I will explain that I am on a budget. When the weather gets too cold for me to leave with wet hair - well, I will deal with that then.

I did question the pricing, but the owner's daughter, who was at the front desk, just called Heather to the front, which increased my embarrasment; all Heather said was that it was a color and style, and I felt too awkward to question further, express my confusion that Kari (previous stylist) had charged way less for what appeared to be not just the same services, but more services, since I more or less styled my own hair with Heather. Then there was my continued feeling of awkwardness about leaving her a ten dollar tip - which was not even 15% - but sheesh! over $100? I mean, this in not New York. I dont know, I may need to look around again for a salon. The problem is that this is the only salon that does Deva cuts in the area; AND other salons are not necessarily less expensive.
If you're willing, perhaps call the actual owner next week to discuss what happened.

I've always left salons with wet hair, winter or summer. In winter, just bring along a hat or a headwrap of some type.

So many salons are such a racket.

I try to be sensitive to the fact that stylists are working people, of course, and that what they charge they do not collect, that the salon takes a percentage. But, I really felt not good about what happened yesterday. I dont think I want to speak with the owner, Claudine, because I dont want to be known as that woman who is a pain in the butt. I am in the process of finding another stylist, again. If I do, then I will simply cancel my appointments that are on the books.
That's the route I usually go as well.

I hope you find someone great.

yes, I checked the salons and stylist recommendations here, and put in a call to one. She works in a salon where stylist rent space. Left her a message.

I may be wrong but in my area, it seems really pricey to pay for color, and then styling. I am not used to that. And for just under $100.
I never get styled. No one can do it right but me.

Its not just the money, Proudcurly. Its the fact that I dont seem to know up front how much I will be paying. What was on the books was a root touch. I paid for a root touch and a stylling.
Myrna, I can totally see what you're saying. I've been home coloring my hair, and not been 100% thrilled with the results, but I'm not sure I want to go back to doing it in the salon. Partly because of experiences like yours, partly because of the time and money commitment. And then dealing with the pricing inconsistency on top of everything else; I don't need to have the salon style my hair - I can do that myself (and use my own CG products since I'm usually not happy with the products the salon uses anyway) but I don't want to pay for services I'm not using anyway. I'd say most of the salons where I'm at charge the same price for cut & style and/or color & style, regardless of whether you have them style or not.

I don't know how to get them to adjust their pricing consistently to reflect that I'm not having them style, either.
It must be especially disappointing to think that you had finally worked out that situation, only to find yourself charged for a styling service you didn't ask for or want - or receive.

Very frustrating.

Thanks, Auntie. Yup, it is frustrating. I thought I had a great salon, and now I am disappointed! But I have a new approach now. First, I googled Deva styling Madison Wi. Some salons/stylists came up. And, I re-checked the salon recs here. Of course, not all the salon recs include people who know how to dry cut hair and are familiar with the Deva methods. Right now, I have 2 consultations set up. One stylist I spoke with, and I basically asked her if she is comfortable using the products that I use at home (I bring them); she does a "dry precision cut" its $30 (I have not had my hair cut in over 2 months at this time); that includes styling; and a root touch is $30, also including styling. So, for those prices, I dont mind getting styled. She is a stylist who had her own chair and shares space with other stylists, so in essence she has her own business. She uses Redken color; I have always had Goldwell.

The other stylist I know less about but I scheduled a consult with her. I dont know her price points, or the kind of color she uses. I will just go and talk with her. I emailed her and we were supposed to talk today but our signals crossed. I 'll just go and see what they both say and go from there.

Yes, if you remember, my "old" salon did not even have a diffuser, and I literally styled my own hair there. Last week, she gave me a dryer to sit under. That was about it. I dont fault her, I came with my roller jaw clips, but she asked me to show her how I place them, and I did. So, who styled my hair?
