CG method: hair is soaking up a ton of condish, normal?
So I have been CG for 3wks now. My hair seems to be soaking up the conditioner. I have gone through an entire bottle of V05 in less than two weeks.
Is this normal? Will it change, or will it stay this way?

Could totally be normal, especially if you have heat and/or sulfate damage. Just sound to me like it's still dry. Have you tried any more moisturizing DTs? VO5 is cheap which is nice, but not very moisturizing. It's a pretty good co-wash for some here. If your hair is dry or porous or both, it may not go very far, as you've noticed. Maybe try something heavier? Like GVP conditioning balm or curl junkie curl rehab. It should go away over time if you get your hair healthier & your protein/moisture balance right.

I started like this, but now I can use a quarter sized amount of my RO and detangle my BSL hair. The healthier my hair is the less conditioner I seem to need.

How much conditioner is a "normal" amount to use when co-washing?

If you have normal porosity (which is listed), it wouldn't be normal to soak up a bottle of conditioner in two weeks. As said before, folks use VO5/Suave to cowash, but for most of us, it's not moisturizing enough.
I wet, use a rinse out and style every day. Also rotate products and rarely use any one product more then once in five days, if that. If I were to use the same rinse out every day--it would probably take almost a month to use a good, quality conditioner. My hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type companies. My hair isn't long and the density is low (age, thyroid and a medication I take.) I probably use 1/4 to 1/3 of an ounce of rinse out.

^ What she said is pretty much what I meant lol. Its not normal for "normal" hair. It would sound right to need that much conditioner, which isnt a very moisturizing conditioner to use as an RO, if you have dry and porous hair. I have fine, thin hair & use about a quarter size glob of RO conditioner.

For my RO I am using a GF, and I need a half dollar sized amount.
I am talking about the actual co-wash part. I get like a palmful, and I can't even get that to distribute all over my scalp b/c my hair seems to soak it up. I need about 2-3 palmfuls to wash with.
I was using Suave, but it seemed to weigh my hair down, so I switched to V05. My hair seems to like the protein as well. My hair is pretty fine and I have to be careful about it getting weighted down.
I think my hair is normal porosity, b/c I didn't heat style much, and I have always seemed to have healthy hair. But, I do have a thyroid condition and I am postpartum so my hair seems thinner and is still falling out a TON.
So how much is normal to use for the actual washing part?

Well for a cowash I tend to use a TON of conditioner. Ridiculous amounts. I like to make sure my scalp is saturated then I massage my scalp and what not. As long as you are getting your scalp clean, I think you need to use what you need to use.

+1. I also use a TON of conditioner for my co-wash. It might sound counter-intuitive, but the heavier I go on the co-wash, the cleaner and less gunky my roots and scalp feel.

OK, thanks. So for this, it is a good idea to use something cheap, huh? Indont mind using something nicer for RO and LI. Once I use up the rest of my GF I will try something nicer.
Thanks so much!

I found suave to weigh me down too much, and high protein conditioners make my hair stiff (as a leave in). I use Everyday Shea, which comes in a pump bottle, and use 4 pumps (about a golf ball amount) on my length below my ears and 1 pump (about a quarter amount) on my crown (otherwise my roots get greasy). I'm 2 weeks into CG. I haven't found an upper limit to the amount of LI my hair will accept, but I don't see much difference going above 4 pumps.

Yeah something cheap for the cowash is definitely a good idea if you use tons of conditioner. Suave and Alberto Vo5 are the ones I normally hear about.
