My hair is BEYOND complicated! The ends are permed and the roots aren't. I have about 1 1/2 inches of newgrowth. Now I don't know if it's classified as going natural but I haven't permed it in at least 3 months maybe more.....I usually only perm it so that i wont have to do as much work when styling my hair, but of course that's damaging my hair so im trying to do it the right way. My hair is not the typical nappy, it LOOKS nappy, but when moisturized its soft but still has the nappy look. Even though its thick you can comb through it without catching any naps. So i don't really know what my hair type is [ive tried to research that]. When wet it gets kind of curly but it gets stiff when dry and looks like a bush of curls BUT none of the curls are defined O_o ... im SO confused!!! I now use moisturizer , leave in conditioner, hot oil treatments.. Its moisturized now but still cant keep a hairstyle.... i can straighten it and wrap it but by the time i make it to the car the ends are now kind of like a bush and the roots are curly...So i straightened it for NOTHING!!!!!! i cant get the curly look OR the straight look?! What am I to do....im lost and it looks like my ponytail is the ONLY hairstyle that works for me?!?!?!?!

***Im thinking my hair is supposed to be like my sons he has the naturally soft, spiral curly when wet, and a slap of water[or anything moist] will lay it down hair and so does my grandfather Im thinking the perm has changed the texture*** BUT then again i could be wrong.?
Of course, your perm has changed your natural texture.

You won't get an accurate representation of your hair until you cut off the relaxed ends.

Have you tried the curly girl (CG) method? Here's a great link describing it: The College Curly
I would recommend trying this, give your hair lots of TLC and time to recover, and you will soon have the curls you want!
Not sure if you've found this thread, but it is what started me on my CG journey. Post your before & After CG pics
It took me awhile to get the hang of everything, but now I am loving my hair, for the first time in my life.

So IMO trying to figure out a hair type of relaxed hair is a waste of time. Plus you can have more than one type on one head. If you are talking only about roots then you probably wont know until you cut off relaxed ends which will weigh your hair down or at least have a lot more than an inch and a half. I'm not sure what typical nappy is but you need to make sure you are conditioning your hair. If you straighten your new growth all the time you risk heat damage. Most of us use a leave in conditioner and then seal with oil or better to keep the hair moisturized. You have two hair textures with two different needs. I dont envy you because transitioning is not easy and not for the faint of heart. I would consider getting braids or doing twists/twistouts. You might also want a good trim on your ends because it has probably been awhile.

im trying to do away w/ the perm ALL TOGETHER! But I have to do most research on how to transition over the net and its all basic info and each site has something different. Im in a small town so a natural beauty salon is MORE than HOURS away! So im kind of just winging it,.
IM confused myself on how to do this properly ... so im looking for hair care products but each website request my hair type but i didnt know you cant tell til your ALL natural

Did you perm your hair curly or straight?

If you permed your hair curly, you might be able to use twist outs, bantu knots, curlformers, or flexi rods to even out the curl pattern til it grows out enough for you to feel comfortable cutting off the rest of the perm.

If you permed it straight, there is little chance any of those options will work with it.

Of course, you could just bite the bullet and do the Big Chop and take all the remaining perm off now. Many women look great in a short afro, and then you just have to learn what your natural hair looks like, likes and dislikes while you continue your natural CG journey.

Edit:Your curl type can't be identified til you can see your natural hair. Your hair type, which is more important for identifying products and ingredients most likely to work for you can, check this site for help with that:

Experimenting with too many products to name here. All this great info keeps my head spinning.
