Default Great curl on one side, straight pieces & frizz on other?

What could be causing this? I had hoped CG and a new haircut would help, but after a month it's still pretty much the same - I get curls on one side, other side has straight pieces (moisturized & shiny, but straight) at the top, with straight frizzy ends on my longest layer (which isn't very long - only jaw length). My hair is baby fine, not chemically treated in any way, never flat ironed.

Not sure if it's at all related, but our dews have been in the mid 70s for a couple of weeks and I can't get anything to work consistently. KCCC+BRHG was working nicely a couple of weeks ago, but now it's leaving me stringy and frizzy and droopy. Having my best hair day in a while today with CCCClite+BRHG - nice volume and moisture, but a few straight pieces, less root curl than I was getting when I started CG a month ago, and that one side looks freaky!

My hair has always loved humidity, but the more I've tried, the worse it looks. I've run the gamut from over proteined to OC already, so now I'm not sure what to do! Please help!

Are the straight bits on the side of your head you sleep on?

Thanks for the reply, Rimi! No, they're not. Exactly the opposite. I did get a satin pillowcase about a week ago, just in case it might make a difference, but no luck.

Hi Again Bookworm5,

Your situation sounds similar to the one I'm going through. For two weeks KCCC was working well with or without gel over it and then - nothing - completely flat hair with little curl.

I posted a question about rotating products the other day, because I had a suspision that that was the culprit. If you read the thread, most people do rotate their products. My hair needs some coaxing to get curls instead of just waves, so I'm think that it has just gotten used to the KCCC and has essentially gotten lazy. I picked up some Recoil and DevaArcAngel, which I'm going to try tonight. I'll let you know how I make out. Maybe a product switch might be the solution for you too.

BTW - your combing suggestion to distrubute the KCCC worked wonders for clumping and adding the BRHG really helped the curls last all day - until my hair decided to putz out...LOL I plan on using the same method with the Recoil. Hopefully it does the trick.

Hang in there, I know it's frustrating and no one wants to spend a fortune on products.

Hello again, Rimi! No, same old home for years I really should have gotten a pic of it yesterday. I'll post some later today if it does the usual. Thanks so much for trying to help my crazy hair!

Hi curlychickie! So glad the combing helped! I wouldn't have tried it if I hadn't gotten so frustrated one day that I rewet and started over. My hair curls easily (all it ever took was rainy weather to make my former blow dried straight hair to spring big loopy curls all over), but my hair is so fine that those curls are delicate, like a baby's curls. Trying to find products that will keep my natural volume while giving defonition, but not pull them out, is proving to be a huge challenge. I LOVE volume! Please do tell me what you think about your new products. I can't figure out what to try next. I'd love to make a few well-informed choices and get several samples to try!

In the meantime, I'm wondering how likely it would be that one side of my head only might be lacking in moisture, protein, or be damaged in some other way? Has anyone else had that happen? Could I have random bits that are more porous? Or in need of sealing? Anybody?

I have a very similar problem. I've just had to admit to myself that it grows that way. Left side is WAY less curly than the right. I'm supper bummed about it though

Sorry I'm not much help, just wanted to share that I'm there with you

Thanks, Jpop825! I'm trying really hard not to be a curl control freak and just accept them. For years I tried to force it to be straight, which it obviously didn't want to do. The last thing I want to do now is to spend waaaaay too much time trying to force it to curl differently!

Consistency from day to day would be nice though

Hi Bookworm5,

Ok. I tried the AG Recoil and love it. It definately encouraged more curl. I used it under ArcAngel and it held up pretty well. I even had spirals in places where I was previously only wavy. I think switching up products regularly will help. I still have those annoying stragly straight pieces here and there though. And my right side is still much curlier than the left. Oh well...

I think given time and patience, I'm sure my curl pattern will become more uniform. I have to remember that I've been straighteng my hair for over 15 years, so I shouldn't expect it to just bounce back in a few weeks. I'm sure that's the case with your hair too.

Not sure, but I think it's not uncommon to have a "lazy" side. Mine is my left side. I've gotten to the point that they are pretty much the same--most of the time. If I have a problem, that's usually it. It's all about getting the protein/moisture balance right.

Have you tried sealing?? I use minute amounts of richer products as my leave in. It takes my hair a long time to absorb the product; however, it keeps my hair from absorbing moisture from the air.

I just found a bottle of NuStyle Organic Hair-Smoothing Serum 1.7 oz that I got a long time ago. Thought my hair didn't like plain oil. Yesterday, I used the SSI Okra Repair, put 2 or 3 drops of the AO oil on my palms, emulsified and rubbed in on my canopy and scrunched it into my hair. Our dew point started out at 68 and went up. My hair really stayed nicely. The few drops weren't too heavy.

Can't stress enough how important it is to rotate products. Keep your hair guessing!

Hi Curlychickie! Thanks so much for getting back to me on those products. I'm going to try rotating some of what I already have, I think - i have samples of all the CJ products - even though so far none of them are working exactly as I'd like. Just ordered samples of some different jellies from Kathymack, though, so I'll soon have more to try! I'm very excited! One thing I did try over the weekend helped A LOT - a shampoo bar! I tried JR Liggett's and really like it. I think my hair really liked all those oils, so I'm going to try more!

Hi Kathymack! Thanks for the sealing suggestion! I confess that I hadn't even considered it. All my life I've been afraid of putting too much stuff on my fine hair and I'm only just starting to realize how much it has needed all this time. I'm sure the soap bars are going to help a lot with getting my curl a little more uniform, so it makes perfect sense to me that a tiny bit of oil might help, too! I've got some extra virgin coconut oil in the pantry. Time to experiment!

Coconut Oil may be a little heavy. Because it's solid at room temperature, it's hard to get a "drop" or two. Be careful and don't use much.

Well, lol, I think I did actually use too much, but I waited until evening to do it in case it looked awful! I am mostly greasy, but the dry straightish pieces on my less curly side really like it, so I know I'm on the right track at least!

That tells me your hair (at least on that side) needs moisture.

Thanks, kathymack. I guess I should have realized that before, but it seems so strange to me that one side should need so much more than the other! Is this common? I can't figure out what I might be doing - or have done - to cause this on just one side! Lol. I don't normally use a LI when I use KCCC, since it just won't work for me, but I'm going to put some on just those spots today.

As always, thanks for sharing your expertise!

Ok, I used my JR Liggett's bar today since I had the oil in my hair from last night. As before, my hair felt super waxy squeaky and weird, only more so, even after ACV rinse. In the interest of continuing to add protein every day, I used SN Coconut Conditioner as a RO, then I scrunched in a little KCKT on my dry straight pieces and blotted a little water out. Because I've neglected to try all of my CJ samples, I decided to try CJ AFG today, alone. Nice! But I am SO surprised because my hair felt nothing like my normal hair. It had soooooo much texture and seemed to just drink up the AFG. I really thought i'd end up a greasy mess, but my hair isn't greasy at all! I'd love more definition and less frizz, but the volume is amazing, the curl held even after I went outside (ugh!). My straighter pieces look much better, too!

Of course, I have no idea if it's just the CJ AFG or if what I'm doing is improving my hair enough to give me better success in general, but progress is being made!

Hi Bookworm, sorry I don't have any useful advice as I have the exact same problem. But I can relate to what you say about forcing hair to be straight when it didn't want to be straight and now spending way too much time forcing it be curly!! Its a conundrum (sp?). All I want is consistency, too.

Thanks for commiserating, springlily! This week I've been trying to focus all my attention on the protein/moisture thing and just trying to make my hair its healthiest. I think in the beginning I focused too much on styling products and not enough on starting with a good base. I'm hoping that my hair will reach it's max potential as it gets healthier, whatever that's meant to be, and I can then be happy with a lightweight styling product. Fingers crossed for all of us!
