FSG help
Hi everyone! I just made and used some FSG for the first time and I need advice. Rather than the frizz control/curl enhancement and clumps I was hoping for based on what most people say about using FSG, it seemed to weigh my hair down and leave it looking greasy and stringy with no clumps!! I am wondering if I just did something wrong or if maybe my hair just doesn't like FSG. I made it pretty thick hoping for better hold, but it still spreads easily and has the consistency of egg whites.
Any ideas? Thanks!!

What did you put in it and what did you use under it?

Thanks for your reply adthomas! I didn't add anything at all because I wanted to see how it would act by itself. underneath it I used a tiny bit of grapeseed oil for sealing and a tiny bit of SM C&S Milk as a leave in. Then I scrunched in the FSG and topped with some Pantene Curl Hair Series mousse. I seem to get similarly bad results when I try smoothing it on dry hair as a finisher. Here is the recipe I used. I probably cooked it a bit longer than she said to because it took a while to get the consistency she recommends. But also I live at altitude so things take longer to cook (thanks, Mile High City!).
Thanks so much for any help you can offer . . .

I'm wondering if the grapeseed oil and other products are weighing your hair down rather than the FSG?

I would agree with GG. I've used a sealer under mine before, but don't really find it necessary. I also never use FSG on dry hair, the consistency of FSG doesn't seem like it would make a good finisher IMO.
The mousse seems like overkill to me. I don't have alot of experience with mousse though, so perhaps it would work the same as gel would. I am thinking it's too much product for your hair type and you should cut back until you see if your hair can tolerate FSG and in what combination with other products - so add them one at a time.

The grapeseed oil plus the milk which has a lot of oil may be culprit. I have fine hair and I have that same milk. if I use more than a tiny bit it makes my hair greasy. I use FSG on damp hair. I add a little EO to it. I use it over my li but no sealer. And + 1 the mousse seems like overkill.

Thanks everyone! These are great thoughts. Perhaps FSG is pretty moisturizing on its own and the sealer is the problem . . . the mousse on top could be making it stringy too. Would anyone recommend making it with a greater proportion of water? Would this make it lighter or just reduce the hold? Hoping I can get it to work well like others have . . . Thanks!!

Well, I use the standard measurement of 1/4c seeds to 1c water, only I don't make it that small of a batch, so really I use 1/2c seeds to 2c water, and I get a yield of about 8oz of gel, give or take.
I have porous hair that sucks up product, so I use a CG gel over my FSG for hold. Otherwise I would not have any hold, and my hair would be too frizzy and undefined as the day went on. I get nice, soft curls and good clumpage from FSG, and good definition, but no hold at all, from FSG. My hair needs the hold from gel. In the summer my gel is a lighter hold gel. In the winter I need a strong hold gel. Because my hair sucks up product so much, I don't have a problem with too much product.
I use about 3oz of FSG at a time when I apply it to my hair, and I apply it to soaking wet hair. I will either use a LI, or not rinse out my RO. I don't use a sealer, but my FSG has oil in it, usually grapeseed.
FSG in general for me is very conditioning, my hair is always very soft. Probably because of the oil in the FSG, and the LI I use. My hair is pretty healthy (it didn't used to be) and I attribute that to the fact that FSG has been my main styler for like 9 months.
