My curls are disappearing!

A little background:

Started CG in May, went from a 2A then 2B then a mix between a 2B and 2C. I honestly LOVED my new curls. I loved having little ringlets and the fact that it really complimented my face. It was awesome! Then sometime between the last few weeks, something changed. Not gradually either, but dramatically.

My definition got a lot better. It used to be way frizzier by EOD and it seemed to just go crazy. Now it defines a lot better and holds throughout the day, but my waves are just that, waves. There used to be ringlets at the ends, and I had a lot more root curl. Now the curls kind of stopped forming until about three or four inches from the top of my head, and they are a lot more limp at the ends. I did a DT about a week ago to see if that would help and it def made my hair softer and shinier, but the curl stayed limp. SO I tried a PT last night after I did an ACV clarifying rinse, again, I could see an amazing difference, and my hair feels so much better and healthier but the curl is even more lifeless and looser.
Iíve attached a before and after pics at the end.

I know itís not build up, I can feel no extra oils or gunk left over, but I canít seem to figure out why. Iíve heard that more definition will give you looser curls too, and Iím almost positive that isnít it. Even on bad days, I would have one or two clumps that were thick and very ringlet-ey in the mix of frizz. I havenít changed my plop and now Iíve had to add clipping in just to get the front to not look plastered to the top of my head.

I can get away with 2nd day hair but not as much as I used to. It seems that by EOD my hair gets even more straight and some of the clumps completely fall straight so Iím having to do the routine almost daily now just to get my hair back to presentable. Iíve tried a few different curl activators and diffused, air dried, scrunched product in, but nothing.

Has anyone has a belated transition phase, or lost their curl after a few months? Anyone see in my products something that might be weighing my hair down without buildup? Anyone wanna help me find where my curls went!? Iím having a curl-life crisis.

You cannot necessarily feel buildup. It would have to be extreme to be able to feel it by touch.

Assuming you have already combed through the ingredients lists of all the hair products you've used since shortly before you started noticing this problem for anything which ends in -cone, -conol, -col, or -xane, but doesn't begin with PEG (i.e. cones), another class of ingredients which might cause buildup is polyquaterniums.

Another possibility is that your hair is fine, and/or needs some protein. I keep a small bottle of Neutral Protein Filler, which I got at Sally's for some ridiculously low price, and I add a few to several drops of that to my conditioner du jour when my hair seems limp, and get notably better root lift and body when I've done so.

It is also possible that your hair could simply be weighing itself down. In that case, getting or giving yourself a trim (a la the instructions and video in Curly Girl: The Handbook) would help. I'm always amazed how much my curl springs back after a trim, though it can take as much as two weeks to see the full effect.

I've done two protein treatments and still nothing. Like before, I can tell they improved the quality of my hair but it's just the curl pattern that seems to be digressing. Also did an ACV last night and really worked it but it didn't help at all.

I'm gonna try the KCCC low poo tonight and give myself a trim. Hopefully that helps. Maybe a combination of both will work.

I have a feeling the weight of my hair might be the problem. It seems like my hair hasn't really grown in the last four weeks by that much but maybe it has.

I had two thoughts when I read your OP:

1. Is your hair tired of the products you are using? If you are using the same products all the time, some of us can stop getting good results from them. It's why we cycle through several different products and don't repeat the same thing too often.

2. Build up. Build up isn't necessarily product. It could be from minerals in your water, pool chemicals, maybe even smog if your air quality is problematic. For this you could try a clarifying shampoo, or conditioner or chelating shampoo or conditioner to see if you see improvement.
Be Happy!

Type:2b/3ab?
Texture:Medium/fine
Porosity:Normal
Elasticity:Normal

Experimenting with too many products to name here. All this great info keeps my head spinning.

The curl isn't improved any but the VOLUME!!! Holy cow it's all so big now. It def doesn't lay flat on my head now.

I'm constantly cycling through products about once a week, trying to find a good combo. This seems to help a bit better so we shall see. I'm gonna keep it up for a few days to see if it improves.

I am just in the learning phase myself but from my experience I found out I was protein sensitive and the results were dry strait hair. I have 2c/3a hair but when I use anything with protein in it now I have mainly 2c hair. I used to could use protein but my hair was a lot more damaged from *gasp* a straitening treatment and color. So I'm guessing once I restored my hair it just said it had enough! Now I avoid all protein and I notice after deep treatments ecspecially ones with heat because I'm low porosity my hair is more on the 3a side.

FYI, thank you all for the input! This is truly the best place to bounce ideas and concerns off of and I really appreciate it!

Well I think the buildup suggestions might have been right. I went ahead and got some KC Come Clean and I had to use it two washings in a row but it's way better. In fact, it was not only way better but the curliest my hair had ever gotten!!

I had the best two hair days in a row! Too bad it was over the weekend an none of my coworkers who think I'm crazy saw it!
